CAPTAIN MARVEL NON SPOILER REVIEW
Well, after an eight-month hiatus from Marvel Studios films, we are here with the debut of Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This is a non-spoiler review of the film, I will have a review full of spoilers coming out later this weekend. So let's get into it.
Captain Marvel is set in 1995 and focuses on Kree warrior Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) discovering her past on Earth and as an air force pilot, as she attempts to put a stop between an intergalactic war between the Kree and the Skrulls, with the help of pet cat, Goose, and a young SHIELD agent, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and other allies from her past.
One of the biggest stigmas around the film is that it is more or less trying to push a political agenda. I personally didn't see that to a degree, and I feel like that has been blown out of proportion. The film plays on the theme of identity, and the idea of being true to yourself. Maybe people thought about that because of one of the music cues, maybe? But I saw that as playing on 90's light grunge style of music used throughout the film. However, the theme can be applied to any number of individuals or groups in the real world, and it flows well within the film, without bashing anyone over who they are, but instead what they do.
Brie Larson was in my opinion great as Captain Marvel. The character had more subtle and more sarcastic humour which I appreciated because it deviated away from the quippy humour that a lot of the Marvel heroes have, which there is nothing wrong with. At the beginning of the film, the character shinned a little more, and that is where her personality was expressed a little more, and that was more in contrast with the characters around her in that first act.
The Skrulls are a species we have been waiting to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time. The main story arch for the Skrulls in the film had some interesting twists, and I personally enjoyed the way that they played them out in this film. There were a few things which did annoy me with some of the Skrull characters and their tone at times. The special effects looked great, especially when used to show the Skrull transformation- which I was also happy that they used prosthetics to bring them to life.
There were characters in the film who were pushed aside, big time, and that was somewhat of a disappointment for me, because these were some characters that I have been waiting to see on screen a little more.
From a technical aspect, this film is gorgeous, from the special effects, cinematography, and the music, it was all great. There were a few times where the special effects did come off as a little weird, but they were usually on point, and there was also a scene where the special effects used to transition between a series of scenes was a little weird. However, the special effects were on point, for the most part, bringing to life a space spectacle. The cinematography was also great in the way that it has some amazing wide and expansive shots which showed some large scope action.
The music in the film was great. The film is set in the mid-'90s presented some great and memorable songs from the era, and they were great to hear on screen and had some really neat cues in my opinion.
Anyway, there is a lot I want to say about Captain Marvel, however, it will get into some spoilers. So overall, this is a great film, not the best, not the worst, it was fine, and I personally had a decent amount of fun viewing it. So I would take a look at this film without if you haven't already, and be sure to stay for the two post credit scenes, which I will talk about next.
