DETECTIVE PIKACHU TRAILER 2 BREAKDOWN

Hey everyone, we are here with a brand new Detective Pikachu trailer, where we get a closer look at the story of the film, a series of new Pokemon in their live-action forms, such as Snorlax, Aipom, Snubull, Cubone, and Blastoise, along with Gengar, and also some Legendary Pokemon showing up. There is a lot to unpack from this trailer, so let's get on with the breakdown.

It appears in the film we will start off with Detective Pikachu himself (Ryan Reynolds), and we will see how his original work partner Harry disappears. I think I have a theory placed together of what has happened with Harry, but I will save that for when I think who took Harry shows up.  I haven't played the Detective Pikachu game which this is based off, nor do I know the exact story of that game, except I know that the Pokemon we see at the end of the trailer has a part in the game, so I'm speculating mostly. blindly here.

In this scene we learn that our Pikachu has a form of amnesia, not having a full memory of what has happened to Harry, creating the mystery that he has to detect with Harry's son Tim (Justice Smith), as we get an extended scene from the previous trailers. I am excited to see where Tim is in the world of Pokemon in this film. Does he hold any current pocket monster? probably not, but this film could develop that a little bit so Tim does become a little more fond of the creatures by the end of the film.

In the bar, we see, arguably one of the goofiest Pokemon that exists, Ludicolo. We don't get a full view of the Pokemon and the coconut like shape he has, but his face looks awesome, and the detailing with the fur looks phenomenal. I also do like the cry that the Pokemon has, it seems like they are utilizing the Pokemon saying their names from the anime with certain Pokemon in this film.

This wide shot presents a laboratory to use, which I suspect is w3here a certain Pokemon was manufactured. And by certain Pokemon I mean Mewtwo, there are no other Pokemon which were made from a test tube. The Mewtwo obviously appears later in the trailer, towards the end. This is where my theory comes in. I believe that Harry was investigating the creation of Mewtwo, and the scientist who was creating him didn't want to get it out and tried to take Harry out. The film could potentially tie one of the many gangs from, the Pokemon series to this lab, creating for a larger and more distinct antagonist.

Here is an up-close look at everybody's non-dragon type dragon Pokemon, Charizard. The Pokemon up close looks phenomenal, with the scales adding so much great detail. The character he is with I do not recognize, but it seems like he is tied with an underground Pokemon battle club. This is probably not run by any of the big gangs which have seen in the main series games, but maybe something from the Detective Pikachu game itself, or an entirely new concept.

Here are a few shots of Pokemon in the city. In this shot, we see Golruk, Arcanine, Charmander, Squirtle, and Growlithe.

Fun Fact: I thought that was Golruck at first because of the emblem on the shoulders, but I was thrown off when I looked at the card I had of the Pokemon, and nearly every image online showed him as blue. I did not keep up with Gen V, and I have been searching for any Pokemon similar to Golruck and Golet in the two generations after it for the past hour.

But hey, the Growlithe look quite neat, I also do like the design of the Archanine, they both have a real-world dog-like design to them which I appreciate they put the effort into.

On the streets of the city, we see a Machamp patrolling some traffic. The Pokemon looks really great, out of all of them, he looks the least rendered, and that's actually a good thing. When you look at more of the humanoid type Pokemon in these trailers like Mr. Mime, the lack of textures compared to the other Pokemon creating a less freaky, and more friendly design.

I absolutely love the Snorlax in this shot though. It looks like a big real-life stuffed toy version of Snorlax. The fur on the Pokemon is a fabulous addition to bring this beloved Pokemon to the real world. The Snorlax does look a little small though, and I guess would pose a road hazard, especially for any car which could crash into it.

Here are a few separate shots of different Pokemon. The first one on the left is of a Snubull which looks brilliant. It has the pitbull-like look that the Pokemon is known for, and it seems like it wants to bite someone's arm off. Then we get a closer look at Bulbasaur in the middle, which looks great. I do love the textures used on bringing Bulbasaur to the real world. Then we see Lickitung, which I have talked about already, and he looks interesting to say at least.

In this scene, we have Pikachu speculating what could have happened to Harry, of all the people that may have abducted him and faked his death. I already covered the theory about his investigation into the creation of Mewtwo, so that's done and dusted.

I do like the way that Piakchu does slap his tail into Tim in this bar scene over and over again.

Here is a new character, Lucy (Kathryn Newton) a junior reporter, who I assume is also following this Mewtwo case as Harry did. We see her with Tim later on in the trailer, and it seems like in this scene she will discover that Mewtwo was created and that it has broken out, and will tell everyone else the news of the mon. The character has a Psyduck as her main buddy Pokemon, which we do see more of in this shot.

In this Pokemon battle ring, we see some DJ's using some Loudreds as their speakers, which is a creative use of the Pokemon. This underground battling ring seems to be pretty iced out. Something tells me that a part of this ring may be somewhat illegal. Pokemon battling is not illegal in the Pokemon world (that's that main part of the main series games), however, just the shadiness from this setting gives it a sense that this shouldn't be happening.

This scene shows off Blastoise for a quick second before it sneaks into its shell and blasts all of the Gengars chasing towards it. We don't get too much of clear look at Blastoise, but judging from what we have seen from Squirtle, it seems like Blastoise will look amazing, with a lot of the detailing that Squirtle has. The Gengars in this shot does look awesome with their gloomy and ghost-like appearance and affects illustrating their typing, and the giving a neat visual flair to this shot.

Out of a Pokeball comes this Cubone which looks cool. The effect of a Pokemon coming out a Pokeball was awesome and does contain a bright white light instead of the red outlining and disintegrating of the Pokemon like in the anime. The Cubone itself does look great. It looks a little scared like something just killed its mother, and now it's wearing her skull.

At first, I thought this was Flareon because of the red tint the Eevee has, but no I was wrong. It was too short to be a Flareon. But nevertheless, this Eevee does look great, with all its detailing, it presents a loveable depiction of one of the most beloved Pokemon of all time. This desk does look quite fancy, maybe the desk of a gang leader. In this shot, we also do see the spectacular wooden carvings of Dialga and Palkia so it will be interesting to see whether or not we see those two legendaries or any other legendaries apart from Mewtwo in this film.

Aipom is one of my favorite Pokemon of all time, arguably my favorite Pokemon from gen 2, but this Aipom with rabies is something. The textures do look great, and it presents a monkey like design and texture to the mon, resembling what it is based off. It seems like an army of Aipoms was sent to take out Detective Pikachu in Tim's apartment. I hope that at some point in the film, we see an Aipom or even an Aibipom which doesn't look like it wants to rip my head off, or looks like an ad for toothpaste.

We see some landmasses folding in on themselves, with Tim, Detective Pikachu, Lucy and her Psyduck on one of them. This seems like it will be the doing of one psychic Pokemon- Mewtwo. With the test tube made Pokemon most likely being the antagonist of the film, it seems like he will be causing the same damage. This shot also seems like it is right before the final act of the film, where this is happening before they enter the city.

In the final act, we will be Rhyme City, where it appears this Pokemon festival is being held, as we see this massive Pikachu blow up balloon in the city exploding. This is a cool shot, and there is something about seeing that loveable yellow face burst into flames which is interesting.

One thing that I do want to know is how celebrated is Pikachu in the Pokemon world compared to our own. Pikachu is the face of one of the largest franchises on the planet, and there are literal celebrations dedicated to this electric mouse. In the Pokemon world, and in this film the Pokemon seems to be celebrated, but not about others, like our own Yellow.

Here he is, the Pokemon, the myth (technically not a mythical Pokemon), the legend, Mewtwo. This is the closest full body shot we get of the Pokemon, and he looks awesome. It has the tall and very stern structure, which creatures for a menacing posture, which from a visual standpoint, looks like a great villain. The Pokemon does have its cat-like face which is based on Mew (who we might see in this film), and the accuracy with Mewtwo is insane.

In terms of the story, I think this might go as any classic Mewtwo story would go. Upset, and confused over his existence, Mewtwo doesn't know what to do, except cause havoc,m and he eventually decides to explore his own inner meaning of life.

I knew that the legendary was going to be in the film because I heard that in the game, the Pokemon has somewhat of a significant role to play. But I thought we would see this reveal in the film itself, which would have been a pleasant surprise. But we could see other surprises in the film, maybe like a surprise appearance from Mew?

With havoc being caused my Mewtwo in Rhyme city, Detective Pikachu must take off the detective cap, and battle as a Pokemon, using Thunder Bolt to take down Mewtwo. It will be interesting to see how this Pikachu in particular, who doesn't battle much, or even at all, take a crack at taking down Mewtwo.

In the last shot below, we do get to see another Mr. Mime gag, where he tries to escape Tim and DP's investigation and crashes.

In conclusion, this second trailer for Detective Pikachu was a spectacular one. From the shots which present new Pokemon in their live-action forms, which look brilliant, the film looks like it takes several liberties to make each shot look great from the lighting to the cinematography, and the music of the original anime theme, and also Bonnie Tyler's "I Need a Hero". And of course, the reveal of live-action Mewtwo was incredible, and something which I could have only dreamed to have seen.
