DARK PHOENIX TRAILER BREAKDOWN

The trailer for the last installment of the X-Men franchise under 20th Century Fox, that being the Dark Phoenix, is out, and this a trailer which is filled with spoilers, and some other interesting things which we will see from this film, so I will go over some of the important things from the film that was shown in the trailer.

Before we start, this film is coming out in June, and we were supposed to see this film in theaters last November, so... take that as you will.

In this opening scene, Mystique (Jenifer Lawrence) is killed by the Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) who at this point in the first act of the film has the power of the Phoenix in her. I don't know why this was spoiled, but they spelled it out, with Jean saying "she was my friend", and then seeing Mystique being thrown back proceeded by a funeral scene where she is absent.

Why was this spoiled, considering it would potentially be seen as a twist in the film? Bad marketing? I have no idea, but I guess R.I.P Mystique.

In this scene we see the team go up into space, which is most likely at the beginning of the film, and this is where they encounter the Phoenix force, which is essentially an extraterrestrial solar flare, so it is sharing its comic origins. In the trailer, we see the Blackbird get hit by the Phoenix, which starts to possess Jean Grey as she starts to fall to Earth. My guess is that this scene directly leads into the one before, where we see the team confront Jean, and she flips out on them killing Mystique. So it seems like her powers just go haywire nearly immediately.

Here we see Jessica Chastain's unnamed character, next to Jean. It appears that in the film the character will be more of an antagonist leading Jean to discover more of her Dark Phoenix potential, and leading to a majority of the havoc caused in the film. The character could be anyone from the comics. Maybe a classic X-man villain from Earth, or an extraterrestrial villain such as someone from the Shi'ar empire who wants to exploit the Phoenix force for her own personal use.

In the trailer, we get a sense of Jean Grey's abilities in the film, as in the scene above we see her crushing Magento (Michael Fassbender) wearing his dis-colored comic helmet, which is intended to keep psychics like Jean Grey (and also Professor X) out of his head. I do like the way that the helmet is being crushed in this shot, it shows a further sense of her powers and how powerful she will be in the film.

This scene also takes place in the Xavier mansion, so it seems like Jean will go there to achieve something by getting something or someone in the film, or she might go there for some blood.

One of the main conflicts in the mutant community in the film will be the idea of just "the girl dies" so simply just killing Jean, and not even trying to stop the Phoenix force inside of her emerging more, or even getting rid of it. It will be interesting to see who will side with who in this scenario, creating a classic mutant conflict which was missing in Apocalypse.

So I guess Cyclops will be leading the side of saving Jean, while Magneto will take the side of killing Jean.

In conclusion, that does it for the breakdown of this Dark Phoenix trailer. I guess for the last film in this franchise, it is great that we are seeing Simon Kinberg coming back to adapt an iconic story, which hopefully will be done better than last time.
