DAREDEVIL CANCELLED
With Iron Fist and Luke Cage being canceled, it seemed like the Marvel shows on Netflix were coming to an end, and that is the reality for arguably the best show, Daredevil.
That is right, after three seasons, the man without fear will not be getting a fourth season with the show being canceled. There were no official reasons given to the show's cancellation, so it is all up for speculation. But if I had to guess I would say that the show was canceled because of potentially low viewership of the third season (Netflix doesn't release any official numbers though), or there may have been issues between Marvel television and Netflix regarding costs, or creative issues.
It is really disappointing to see that Daredevil is canceled, and I would say that the two shows in production will end after their seasons come out. That being Jessica Jones season three, and Punisher season two. Back in 2013 with these shows being announced, I was excited to see these characters get their own stories, but it is sad to say that these street heroes are seeing their end.
In a statement to Deadline, Netflix said: "While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
This quote highlights some interesting aspects. The part that does concern me is the three season remaining on Netflix. Although it will be awesome to the show on Netflix, it seems as though the distribution rights of the show will remain on Netflix, and will not be shifted to another streaming platform, such as Hulu (not Disney+ - it not airing R rated content) for a potential revival.
- I could be wrong about the way that the show is distributed, as I have no insight on what contract or agreement was made between Marvel Television and Netflix.
However, there is a part of the quote which does mention the "future" for the character. It is possible that we see Charlie Cox as Daredevil in the upcoming Jessica Jones or Punisher seasons. It is also possible that the character does appear on another Marvel television series, such as Agents of SHIELD (which was renewed for two more seasons).
It was revealed in an Infinity War QandA with the Russo brothers from yesterday that television characters were considered, however, juggling their arcs would be too much, and there was already a lot happening in Infinity War. It seems like if Daredevil does appear in any Marvel Studios film it will be on a smaller scale or a less intense film. If Daredevil did appear in any film I would say it would be a Spider-man film, however, it would be a small cameo with Matt Murdock, and not in the devil suit. That would be mostly because of the drastic tones of the characters.
Daredevil: "Can you help me stop some human trafficking in Hells Kitchen"
Spider-man: "I got some geometry homework that I need to do, so... another time"
But a cameo would still be a lot of fun and would act as a nice reminder that the character does exist in the grand marvel cinematic universe.
In conclusion, it is disappointing to see Daredevil get canceled, especially after such a brilliant third season. The show was spectacular, and I am sad to see that it will not have any new episodes, and this seems like it marks the end for the other two Netflix shows. There is still the possibility that the characters can appear elsewhere in the MCU.
What are your thoughts on the cancellation of Daredevil, and what did you want to see from the fourth season?
