TITANS "TITANS" REVIEW

Season 1 Episode 1:

It is here, the first episode of the DC Universe original show, Titans, directed by Brad Anderson, which focuses on the Teen Titans in a darker grittier DC Comics universe. This show has some interesting storylines which were set up so I will discuss them, their future and how they worked if they were good or bad. So spoilers ahead for the first episode of Titans.

The episode focuses on Rachael (A.K.A Raven) who has been having dreams of Dick Grayson, the Robin, who is a police officer in Detroit by day and by night a vigilante. With her adoptive mother killed, Rachael runs away and finds Dick, who saves her from some religious mercenaries who tried to kill her. With Rachael's powers being unleashed, the two drive off to seek help.

Meanwhile, a mysterious woman named Koriand'r (A.K.A Starfire) who has been having amnesia, forgetting what has been happening with her. After discovering some powers that she had, Koriand'r finds a picture of Rachael and sets off to find her.

The episode ends with a green tiger stealing some video games, as he turns into a boy.

To start off, this episode was a solid start to this season. I was kind of worried how this episode was going to evolve, however, this episode played its cards right as it set up its storylines and almost noted all the problems that people thought the show would have in the marketing of the show.

Robin was the highlight of the episode to me. The character starts on a character arch where he is finding himself being alone, not only being out from the Wayne family, however, also the bat family as he is going about being Robin without Batman. The show will focus on Dick finding a new family with the formation of the Titans team. I do like the Robin suit that the show used, it looks great, and I can not wait to see what the Nightwing suit will look like further in the shows run.

The show has also done a great job to hint at a wider DC universe, as they set up Batman, which obviously needed to happen because Robin is in the show. There are other characters which exist in this universe, I am assuming. And just to note, this show is not connected to the other CW shows, including Black Lightning, or Gotham.

Rachael was an interesting character. I do like the comic change of the character not having permanent grey skin. It allows her to fit in more and give her a sense of humanity. One of the things I like about the character of Raven is that she essentially is a human, however, she excludes herself. The show seems like they are going on that path with the character. The use of the demonic looking Raven being reflections reminded me of Venom, where a similar thing happened in that film with Eddie and Venom. The character seems interesting, and there are these sudden lashes of horror from within her. One thing which did annoy me about the character was when she ran away from her mother's murder because it made the character a little less empathetic, and it made her meeting with Robin feel a little forced.
The people going after Rachael in the episode were people who wanted to stop Rachael's father, Trigon, from coming into Earth and destroying everything because Raven is the gateway between Earth and Hell, where her father resides.

In the promotion of the show, the character of Starfire got a lot of complaints, because of the way that she looked drastically different from her comic counterpart looking like a regular person rather than an alien, albeit 70's clothing. However, it was revealed that the character would get a version of her comic book costume at the end of the season. The episode played on that, by hinting that this character has been brainwashed and her memories have been stripped away.

If I had to speculate, I would assume that Star's sister, Blackfire brainwashed Starfire, sent her to Earth, disguised her as a regular person, therefore, Blackfire could claim the throne of Tamaran for herself.

The end, of course, was just Beast Boy, who did not get too much time in this episode, just a set up for next week's episode

The cast of the episode was great, I do have to say that Brenton Thwaites was astounding as Robin, and does serve as a great base for the show to stand on. I enjoyed his delivery on expanding on this lone bird, and he created an overall likable character who ultimately wants to be a good hero. The rest of the cast was also great in the episode, and I am looking forward to what will be happening to their characters in the season. Starring in the episode we had Brenton Thwaites (Dick Grayson/ Robin), Tegan Croft (Rachael Roth/ Raven), Anna Dip (Koriand'r/ Starfire), Lindsey Gort (Amy Rohrbach), Sherilyn Fenn (Mrs. Roth), Jarreth J. Merz (Acolyte), and Ryan Potter (Gar Logan/ Beast Boy).

In conclusion, this first episode of Titans was a better than expected start to the series, as it did a great job in setting up the characters and their respective storylines to pay off later down the road either in this season or later in the series. There were great character dynamics, especially between Robin and Raven, which did hold the episode together, along with the grittier tone to show the state of these characters. I will give this episode of Titans a 7 out of 10.
