RIVERDALE "JUDGMENT NIGHT" REVIEW

Season 2 Episode 21:

I have returned. It has been a couple months since my last Riverdale recap and review, and I decided to binge my way through the episodes I missed, all of which bring us to tonight's episode directed by Cherie Nowlan, which brings us full-blown riots in Riverdale as we see the identity of the Black Hood revealed. Spoilers, spoilers, and more spoilers for this episode of Riverdale let's recap.

The episode opens with the Black Hood visiting Cheryl, who uses her archery skills to shoot the Black Hood in his shoulder, as he flees. With the riots in Riverdale, Fangs is shot and in the hospital being operated on. Archie discovers that Reggie did not shot Fangs, so he and the other Black Circle members try to stop the Serpents from killing Reggie. Meanwhile, Veronica finds out that Midge's mother shot Fang, as the police handle that situation. With the town still in havoc, Archie, Kevin, and Moose find Reggie in Pops, which is being invaded by the Ghoulies. Sherik Keller,  FP, and Fred show up and stop the Ghoulies from invading Pops. Meanwhile, getting a call from Penny Peabody, Jughead has to go and save Toni from Penny who hired the Ghoulies. Cheryl shows up to help Jughead save Toni, as the three leave.

Hiram leaves Riverdale, as a mysterious man goes to the Lodge house as he confronts Hermione and Veronica. The man is Small Fry (son of Papa Poutine), Hermione pulls out a gun and kills Small Fry. Jughead calls up Hiram and confronts that he is behind the riots because he can not by the people, they just have to destroy themselves, and he enlisted the help of Penny. Jughead makes a deal with Hiram and Penny.  Back home, Fred and Archie are attacked by the Black Hood who pulls out a gun. Fred saves Archie, as the Black Hood runs away.

Meanwhile, Betty learns from Cheryl that the Black Hood was shot in the shoulder. Betty goes to the hospital to visit her father, however, he is missing, leaving the body of a doctor behind. Betty calls up her mom, Alice, as she learns that her father is at home. Rushing home, Betty sees Hal putting on some old home videos of him as a kid. In the video, a young Hal is told to keep quiet about the murders his father committed. Hal tells Alice to turn on the recorder. Hal tells Alice and Betty that his father killed the Blossom grandfather and not the other way around. So when the Conway father learned of the secret, Hal's father killed the whole Conway family except for Svenson. Hal gets Betty to say who Hal is, and Betty says that her father is the "Black Hood". Hal tells Betty that he was inspired that the speech she gave (in the season one finale). Hal admits to the shootings, as he chocks Alice, as Betty knocks out Hal.

The police show up and take away Hal. Archie comes along and tells Betty that he was confronted by the Black Hood, while Hal was talking to them. Jughead calls up Betty and says he loves her, which leaves Betty to call FP. Jughead goes and gives himself up to Penny and the Ghoulies, who beat up Jughead, however still declare war on the Serpents tomorrow. The Serpents, Cheryl, Archie, and Betty show up too late as FP finds Jughead's beat up body.

Overall, this episode of Riverdale was amazing. The way that the episode was structured was brilliant, in the way it divided the four main kids, and they each have interesting stories branching off revolving around this one story of the Black Hood and the riots. So going through. Archie's plot was great. I loved the way that with his scenes we explored what was going on with the riots, and how devastating everything is. Following Archie's plot was Jughead's, which was amazing. I loved the way that Jughead had to calm everyone down from not killing each other. Bringing Penny into the episode was unexpected, and really adds to the dumpster fire that is going on in Riverdale. The end of the episode was unexpected, and really shows how the main characers are affected by the incidents going on in Riverdale. I know that Jughead is not dead, but he could potentially be side lined, as everyone else in Riverdale fights Penny and the Ghoulies.

Veronica had a slightly interesting part, as disconnected as it was. I liked how the plot was the reasoning for Hermione and Veronica seeing why Hiram isn't that great of a person because there is blood on his hands. In the episode we did see the October leaks push Veronica away, however, this was the final nail in the coffin. But the plot that everyone is talking about, Hal as the Black Hood. This wouldn't have been too hard to predict. The only water I had on this theory was that Hal's eyebrows weren't that defined. The way that this was revealed was amazing. All the clues lined up, and Hal making Betty confirm it was intense. I was at the edge of my seat for the episode, because, the idea of Hal being the Black Hood was teased last week. This is an awesome reveal, with an interesting motivation and plan, however, there is another Black Hood, which is insane. That other Black Hood could potentially be the real lost Alice and FP child. Comment below your theories.

Lilli Reinhart was amazing as Betty. In creating the in-comprehendible emotion in the character of Betty seeing her father be the murderer she was trying to stop was amazing. Reinhart did a fabulous job in this episode and really brought the intensity of that plot out. The cast of the episode was amazing. Starring in the episode we had KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews), Cassey Cott (Kevin Keller), Martin Cummins (ex-Sheriff  Tom Keller), Charles Melton (Reggie Mantle), Cody Kearsley (Moose Mason), Alvin Sanders (Pop Tate), Jordan Connor (Sweet Pea), Skeet Ulrich (FP Jones), Brit Morgan (Penny Peabody),Tommy Martinez (Malachi), Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge), Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge), Henderson Wade (Sheriff Minetta), Stephan Miers (Andre), Andre Tricoteux (Small Fry), Mรคdchen Amick (Alice Cooper), and Lochlyn Munro (Hal Cooper/ Black Hood).

In conclusion, this episode of Riverdale was spectacular, in the way it was scripted, filmed, and acted. The episode had a lot going on, all of which was handled relatively well. I enjoyed seeing the different sides to the Riverdale riots, and we got an impressively done reveal to the identity of the Black Hood. I will give this episode of Riverdale a 9 out of 10.
