POKEMON "LET'S GO" TRAILER BREAKDOWN
The new Pokemon Games for the Nintendo Switch have been announced, and the rumors are true, the two new games are titled "Let's Go Pikachu" and "Let's Go Eevee", however with the new trailer, we see a brand new Kanto remake which looks brilliant with brand new features, a slightly different art style, and some exciting integrations. So let's go ahead and take a look at the trailer.
So with the Let's Go games, we see that the game seems to fall in line with Pokemon Yellow a little more with Pikachu being a protagonist. However, in these games, Pikachu or Eevee will be the starter, depending on what version of the game you get.
In the trailer, we see the nato region professor, Professor Willow back. He seems the base as he was 25 years ago. I am not too sure how he will be weaved into the narrative of the game, like if his grandson is going to be Blue, the antagonist or if that is going to be changed. In the background of the shot, there are a few silhouettes. One is of Rattata, however, there is a mystery one, which could potentially be a Generation 8 rat type pokemon.
"Gotta Catch 'Em All!", the catching mechanic of these new games appears to be heavily inspired off Pokemon Go, which there are pros and cons of. With Pokemon Go being a success, they want to capture the feel of that game in these games, which is neat, and I like how it looks, the idea of you, the player throwing the Pokeball is great. However, it appears there is no Pokemon battling. As in battling wild Pokemon. That is one of the things I wish was in Pokemon Go.
Oh what's that, I encountered a 2500 CP Dragonite, well, only have Pokemon Balls, not catching it. If there were a wild Pokemon battling system, even with Pokeballs there would be a chance to catch the Dragonite.
Without the wild Pokemon battling, there seems to be a lack of griding, which makes me wonder how can we level up the Pokemon. But this is only test footage, so I hope that Game Freak does implement battling wild Pokemon.
A look into the battling system. I like the 3D look that it has, it looks very polished. It appears to be the same, however, you can see that the stats to include the Combat Power, which is heavily used in Pokemon Go. The two versus one does seem a little unfair, however, the second player uses the first person's Pokemon in battle. So I suppose that makes up for it, especially if the opponent has six Pokemon.
A new addition to the games is a new device which is a Pokeball. The device appears to function as a simple single button controller, which is helpful to scroll through lists and Pokedex's. However, the trailer shows that a Pokemon can be placed into the Pokeball, and it will make noises if the ball is touched. However, there seems like there will be other rewards for putting Pokemon in the ball.
One of the coolest parts of these games is the buddy Pokemon. You can now have two buddy Pokemon walking around with you on the map. The first one is obviously Eevee or Pikachu, and there will always be another Pokemon walking behind you. This looks so awesome on the map and does remind me of Ash in the anime. I do like how you can see the Pokemon using their abilities, like Lapras surfing, and Charizard flying, it all looks awesome.
It would not be a Kanto remake with the made in a lab Pokemon, Mewtwo. The Pokemon is in a cave, like the original Red and Blue games. I am interested to see if Mewtwo will be incorporated into the story in a large way, or will we see him at the end of the game, when we get the Masterball, and can catch it.
This is when you wish that the Switch Pokemon could be transferred to Go.
The trailer ends with a little mystery, and that is a new Pokemon coming to Pokemon Go. This mystery Pokemon is confirmed to be a brand new generation eight Pokemon, which will be first introduced in Pokemon Go, by sending a gift from the Switch to the phone. If I had to guess, I would assume that this mystery Pokemon would be a new Eeveelution. First of all, we get new Eeveelution every even generation, and it would go with the theme of these new games. Having new Eevelution would be awesome, and there are so many possible variations of what we could see, whether it be an Eeveelution or brand new Pokemon.
In conclusion, this trailer is amazing, and I am looking forward to these games. We are visiting the Kanto region again, but it seems like a great way to tie in this new look of a Pokemon game back to the start. There are so many great things adapted to the game such as the buddy system, the spawning of wild Pokemon, as well as the incorporation of Pokemon Go, which is awesome, and something which kind of surprised me in a good way, and it makes playing it that much more interesting.
