THE FLASH "FURY ROGUE" REVIEW

Season 4 Episode 19:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of the Flash, directed by Rachel Talalay, and this episode brings back Wentworth Miller as Citizen Cold, Captain Cold's doppelganger from Earth-X. Along with the cold gunned hero is the Earth-X Black Siren, named "Siren-X", played by Laurel Lance herself, Katie Cassidy. So spoilers ahead for this episode, let's recap.

After the increase in dark matter, Harry sees that his intelligence is decreasing. Meanwhile, Barry has a struggle in dealing with Ralph's death, whilst Caitlin tries to see what happened to Killer Frost. In seeing pocket dimensions open, team Flash sees that DeVoe is going to try to get one of the last bus Meta-Humans, Neil Borman, AKA "Fallout". With no Killer Frost to fall on to cool down Fallout, and a janky Captain Cold gun, Barry, and Cisco vibe over to Earth-X, where they recruit Citizen Cold, saving him from Siren-X, who managed to get to Earth-1.

At STAR Labs, the team creates a plan, while Barry has a talk with Leo about the death of Ralph. Leo tells Barry that he has to grieve Ralph in order to move ahead. Driving a truck to an Argus facility to hold Fallout, Leo, Caitlin, and Barry guard their meta if DeVoe comes after them. Ambushed by DeVoe, Barry freezes, having flashbacks to Ralph's death. Siren-X confronts the team and DeVoe, as she knocks them down, and takes Joe, Caitlin, and Fallout hostage. Back at STAR Labs, the team tries to see how they can track and save their friends. Cisco wants to make himself a thinking cap, however, Harry stops him and tells him about his brain, and how he used dark matter.

Siren-X holds Fallout, Joe, and Caitlin at the police station, as she tries to let Fallout go nuclear. Leo and Barry show up as Barry fights Siren-X. While Leo and Caitlin use freeze guns to cool down Fallout. Barry runs upstairs to his old lab, where he has a talk with Joe where he realizes that he failed Ralph. Back in STAR Labs, Cisco gives Leo a breaching device, as he can cross between Earth's, as Leo goes back home to get married to the Ray. Barry and Iris go to therapy to get over Ralph's death. Siren-X goes to an Argus prison and Fallout in a secret simulation in an Argus prison. DeVoe has a problem calculating human emotion, as he lost, as Marlie sees that her husband is no longer human.

Overall, this episode of the Flash was an exciting way to bring back Citizen Cold. Although the episode felt relatively self-contained there were a few story elements weaved into the episode in ways that were interesting. With bringing back Citizen Cold, I enjoyed how the episode toyed with the idea the character's friendships with the different characters, compared to how Captain Cold used to interact with team Flash. In the episode, I liked how Leo was more of a therapist for Barry than the actual therapist that Barry and Iris went to. In the crossover, we didn't explore too much of Leo and team Flash, so I was glad that this episode went out of its way to explore the dynamic between this version of Captain Cold and the team.

One of my favorite scenes of the episode was the end scene where Leo went back to Earth-X. They gave Leo one of those breach devices that Supergirl has. That just leaves the room for the character coming back to any of the other tv shows open. Therefore, Leo can come and go to the Flash or Legends whenever. Depending on when Wentworth Miller comes back and is available, Citizen Cold will come back. The Earth-X Leo is the Captain Cold we will most likely see from here on out, as he is kind of becoming like the Earth-1 version of the character, with the jacket included.

The introduction of Siren-X was interesting. I saw the announcement a couple days ago and I thought that the character was going to appear later on in the season, but nope this episode. With the character, I like the idea that she is so vengeful for what happened to her regime and her friends, that she wants to do everything she can to destroy Earth-1. I do feel like that the episode if it wanted to, could have played on the idea that more Earth--X characters want revenge on the Earth-1 heroes for what happened. The episode didn't fully explore the effects of what happened in the crossover on Laurel, which was a shame, because it felt like a wasted opportunity. Some of the effects used to illustrate the powers of Siren-X were a little weird, especially with the sonic hearing. I feel like it could have been better, but it was cool that the power was introduced.

DeVoe in the episode got some neat development. I enjoyed Neil Sandilands back as the Thinker, I can not stress how much I missed Sandilands back as the villain because no one can portray the greatness of this villain like Sandilands. In the episode, we see part of his downfall, and that is human emotion. The one thing that can not be calculated. I liked the concept of how that happened, however, there was some poor writing in the episode where DeVoe "didn't anticipate" where they were taking Fallout to. It takes DeVoe out of character. It makes sense if DeVoe can not calculate human emotion but he can solve near an infinite amount of other solutions. That would set up Marlize potentially leaving DeVoe later this season as teased in this episode.

Wentworth Miller was fabulous as Citizen Cold in the episode. I liked the portrayal of the character, and how the relationship with him and team Flash was developed in the episode. It made for some fun moments.
Katie Cassidy was also great as Siren-X. I like how the character was fitted in the plot of the episode, however, I wish that they did explore this iteration of the character a little more because there could have been some emotional scenes there. That might happen on Arrow, we'll have to wait and see.
Neil Sandilands was amazing as DeVoe. I said earlier, I missed him back as DeVoe. No one can portray the character with such integrity as well as Sandilands. I was a little disappointed with the writing with the character, in the way he didn't anticipate events, however, I do like the idea that the character can not calculate and therefore not anticipate for human emotion. It makes for an interesting concept.

The cast of the episode was great, everyone portrayed their character in a way where it fitted the scenario, and bought the episode to life. Starring in the episode we had Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ The Flash), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/ Citizen Cold), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow), Ryan Alexander McDonald (Neil Borman/ Fallout), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Tom Cavanagh (Harry Wells), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramone/ Vibe), Katie Cassidy (Siren--X), Donna Pescow (Dr. Finkel), Kim Engelbrecht (Marlize DeVoe/ the Mechanic), and Neil Sandilands (Clifford DeVoe/ the Thinker).

In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was an entertaining episode, in the way that it brought back Citizen Cold in this plot which could have been played more as a thriller. We were introduced to Siren-X, who could have had some more emotionally driven scenes to increase the stakes in the episode, however, I did enjoy the season story elements weaved in the episode. I will give this episode an 8 out of 10.
