SUPERGIRL "IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 15:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new review of Supergirl, directed by Andi Armagnian. This episode continues its streak of being an awesome episode, as this episode centers around M'yrnn and his effects on the people around him. In the episode, we also see the debut of Mon-El's super suit. Spoilers ahead for this episode of Supergirl, let's recap.

Suffering from dementia, J'onn's father, M'yrnn, accidentally has a telekinetic crack where he corrupts a Finhead causing the Finhead to have violent tendencies. Kara suits up and takes down the alien. At the DEO, the team figures out what went down, all the while J'onn worries about his dad. While at the DEO, Mon teaches Kara some cape tricks that he learned from the future. When at the DEO, M'yrnn prays in a room, however, he has some more telekinetic cracks, which creates an aggression in Wynn and Demos who fight, and also Alex. J'onn creates a field to stop the corruption. Kara and Alex walk through their alien prison where they find Finhead in a seizure.

Meanwhile, Lena confronts Sam in her special medical bay, where she tells Sam she is Reign. Sam freaks out, as Lena angers her, bringing out Reign, as Sam falls into the dream grass world. Waking up, Sam sees the footage of herself turning into Reign, which freaks out Sam. Lena tells Sam that she will keep her daughter safe, as she tries to get the Reign persona out of Sam.

J'onn tells Kara and Alex about her father, as Kara tells J'onn that the "son becomes the father." Confronting his praying father, J'onn tries to dampen M'yrnn's powers, however, M'yrnn starts to corrupt everyone in the DEO. Kara feels the aggression, and she starts to yell at Mon. Kara places a dampening chip on her ear, blocking the kinetic breakdown from M'yrnn. As everyone fights one another, and the villains escape their cells, Winn goes around giving everyone the air pieces to not be corrupted. Kara uses he new cape tricks from mon to take down some villains. J'onn tries to talk to his father, who doesn't want to listen to him. J'onn goes to fight a White Martian, as Kara talks to M'yrnn. Understating his harm, M'yrnn allows J'onn to place the dampening bracelet on him, bringing everything to peace.

With everyone back to normal, M'yrnn apologizes to everyone for his actions. Jimmy has a moment with Lena. The episode ends with Kara and Mon suiting up as they fly above the city, as birds drop dead as Mon mutters "Pestilence."

Overall, this episode of Supergirl was amazing. I love the new style which the show is aiming at, a style where they aren't afraid to have fun, and they want to embrace the lighter tone that the show has in roots. The opening scene of this episode explored this flawlessly. With the music track, I loved that first takedown Kara made in the photo booth at the beginning of the episode. I like how the show is aiming to not be as dark, however, it can still maintain stakes in these stories that it tells.

I enjoyed the main story of this episode, with M'yrnn. It created for a neat development in the relationship of J'onn and his father. I liked how the theme of the son becoming the father was used in the episode. How J'onn had to parent his own father, to do the right thing. It created a touching story for characters who haven't been humanized enough in the show. Going forward in the season, it is possible that M'yrnn can help take down Reign, with his telekinetic abilities, as teased in the episode.

Speaking of Reign, the side plot in the episode was great. I liked how the main story of the season was converted to be the side plot of this episode and possibly the next few episodes. In creating this Lena and Sam plot, the show managed to progress the story of the season, while also telling these other interesting antidotes, with the more interesting characters. As a character who has not received much screen time, thus less interest, I am pleased to see how the show is presenting Lena to be involved with this main plot of the season, while still being on the side.

The episode presented many glorious scenes. I do have to say that the end telekinetic battle with M'yrrn corrupting everyone we great. There were some amazing action sequences incorporated into that battle, all of which displayed awesome skills from each character, and it was great to see. I loved seeing Mon in suit super suit in this season because that suit does look pretty sweet.

David Harewood was amazing as J'onn in the episode. Bringing the emotional aspect to the character, Harewood created a more human side to the character in this episode, all of which was pulled off beautifully, especially with the theme of the son becoming the father. I also can not praise Carl Lumbly enough for his performance in this episode. He was brilliant as M'yrnn in the episode. The rest cast of the episode was brilliant. Everyone on the cast played their character with such integrity to make the scenarios in the show to feel authentic, which brought the level of the show, up. Starring in the episode we had David Harewood (J'onn J'onzz/ Martian Manhunter), Carl Lumbly (M'yrnn J'onzz), Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers/ Supergirl), Chris Wood (Mon-El), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Mechad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), and Odette Annable (Samantha Arias/Reign).

In conclusion, this episode of Supergirl was amazing in the way that it worked with the tone, it created a lighter tone, in line with the series, at the same time maintaining the emotional and drama aspects, which the show has improved upon in this episode. With great acting and an interesting story, this was one great episode. I will give this episode an 8.75 out of 10.
