AVENGERS INFINITY WAR "IRON MAN" DISCUSSION
So this is the first of the character discussions I want to do for Infinity War, so why not start off with the man who started it all, Robert Downey Jr, as Tony Stark, Iron Man. Here I will talk about the role of the character in the film, and what he will do in Avengers 4. So spoilers for Infinity War, let's get started.
In the film, Tony is seen to be building new tech for the imminent alien invasion which comes in this film. At the beginning of the film, he is with Gwyneth Paltrow, who reprised her role as Pepper Potts. Tony tells her that he had a dream where they had a kid. I don't think that hints at the character having a kid, however, that is more of a nod to the idea that Tony is the father figure of Peter Parker, which shines more of an emotional light on that scene at the end of the film. From meeting Doctor Strange, Tony doesn't get on too well with him. I love this idea because most people were like, "well the two are basically the same", the film goes out of its way to show the differences between the two which was great. In that scene, Tony met back up with Bruce Banner, who he was excited to see, thinking he was dead before.
Going into space, Tony had this feeling like he knew that this was the end for him. The final cards are being played, and wherever they were going, he might not make it out alive. When meeting the Guardians, Tony had a great interaction with Star-Lord. "You're from Earth?" "No I'm from Missouri" "That's on Earth dumbass." On Titan, Tony fighting Thanos was great, because all the upgrades we see him have failed to work on Thanos, who crushes him in seconds.
When Tony got impaled, I thought that it was the end for him. However, Doctor Strange offers Thanos the time stone for Tony's life. That was a pivotal scene, as it hints towards Doctor Strange knowing that Tony is a pivotal key to defeating Thanos for good.
When Thanos snaps his fingers, no one of the Guardians or Avengers on Titan know what is going on. Tony sees Drax, Mantis and Quill turn to dust as he turns to Doctor Strange who turns to dust and Peter also turns to dust. Getting back to the first scene, Tony seeing Peter turn to dust is like Tony seeing his own child die, which is heartbreaking. The part of that scene that does kill me is how Tony tried to ensure Peter that he was okay. With all his friends and allies turned to dust, Tony was left on Titan. This is where we get into Avengers four.
On Titan, Tony has little of his armor left. So Tony has to work with Nebula to use the Milano to get off Titan and head to Earth. I am excited to see how Tony and Nebula will work with each other in Avengers four because they didn't really interact with each other in Infinity War.
Going off the assumption that Avengers 4 takes place within a span of a couple days from Avengers Infinity War, we will see Tony come back to Earth and meet up with Captain America for the first time since their falling out in Civil War. With all the original phase one Avengers members alive, Tony will reunite with all the other members, such as Black Widow, who he last saw in Civil War, along with Hawkeye. The two former spies seem like they will be a little reluctant to work with Stark, seeing as he signed the Sokovia Accords and got them as fugitives. One of the biggest reunions in Avengers four will be Iron Man and Thor. The two haven't seen each other since Age of Ultron back in 2015. Thor has changed a decent amount in his appearance since that time so it will be interesting seeing Tony make fun and create new nicknames for Thor.
In a more serious tone, it is possible that Pepper Potts turned to dust, so that will be an extremely heavy impact on Tony. Speaking of Iron Man related characters, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan is going to appear in Avengers 4, I don't know how, but he will.
Avengers four will also have the Iron Man Mark 50 suit. In Infinity War, the nanotech suit is the Mark 48, the new Hulkbuster that Banner had was the Mark 49, so Mark 50 is the Avengers four suit. That suit could be a number of different variants, in the color, and design. In Avengers four, it would be cool seeing a version of the model 49 suit. That was the Black and Gold suit with the red arc reactor. That seems like something that could be done on screen. The model 50 in the comics, was the complete silver suit, which does look neat, however, is similar to the Mark 2. Anyway, with possible time travel elements, it seems like we will be seeing some older Iron Man armors in Avengers four.
Avengers four will have the final fight against Thanos. So it seems like some of the Avengers left still alive might die in trying to bring back all the dust heroes. Iron Man is near the top of my death prediction list for Avengers four, next to Captain America, and Nebula. Iron Man going out seems fitting. The one who started the first era of Marvel films is the one to end it.
In conclusion, Robert Downey Jr. was once again amazing as Iron Man, and it was amazing to see him on screen stand next to characters like Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The performance was amazing, especially in the end scenes, where he sees Peter and everyone else die. I am excited for Tony Stark to be on screen, potentially for one last time in Avengers four next year.
