ARROW "BROTHERS IN ARMS" REVIEW
Season 6 Episode 17:
Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Arrow, directed by Mark Bunting, as this episode explores the idea of John wanting to become the Green Arrow, while John and Oliver explore what the hood means to them both, all the while Ricardo Diaz corrupts more of the city which Dinah and Curtis try to stop. Spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.
The episode opens up with Dinah and a small group of clean police officers following Anatoly who they are about to arrest. While Oliver and John take down the members of Anatoly's posse in the back, Dinah and police arrest Anatoly. In the police station, backed by Quentin and Oliver, Dinah tells Captain Hill that she arrested Anatoly because of Oliver's command as Mayor. Oliver has a talk with the arrested Anatoly. In the Arrow cave, Oliver and John have a small discussion about them in the field. Meanwhile, Ricardo Diaz shoots one of the police officers with the help of a now free Anatoly. Finding out about the dead officer, team Arrow sees that the officers who are not corrupted by Diaz are being targetted. John goes to Argus to get information on Vertigo, the drug that Diaz is dealing. There, John has a talk with his wife, Lyla about wearing the hood.
In the Mayor's office, Oliver calls in Captain Hill and Attorney Armand as he confronts them of being under Diaz's thumbs. Hill tells Oliver that Diaz was threatening the life of her family, while Armand tells Oliver that he needed the money to cover his son's cancer treatment. Oliver tells the two that he will try to save their families before he fires the two. Meanwhile, Laurel tries to consume the identity of Earth-1 Laurel by studying up on the law. Felicity finds a location on a Vertigo dealer. Oliver and John head out as they confront the dealer. John nearly pushes the dealer too far, however, the dealer's girlfriend kills the dealer. Back in the Arrow Cave, John and Oliver argue about what happened. Felicity enters and breaks up the argument, with John leaving. Meanwhile, Laurel gets a visit from Diaz who thanks her for her work.
John has a talk with Lyla before going back to the Arrow cave. John and Oliver have a discussion about the Green Arrow mantel, and how Oliver has a lot of other commitments. The two talk about how Oliver has changed by becoming the Green Arrow, and how it has become the better side of Oliver. John talks about how Oliver is being selfish with wanting to become the Green Arrow, thinking of himself over the city, but Oliver tells John that he was selfish when he did not mention his injuries which got people hurt. John talks about how Oliver drops a trail of bodies, and Oliver tells John "at least I didn't kill my own brother." John punches Oliver, and Oliver punches John, as the two scramble into a fight. Felicity comes in and breaks up the brawl. Meanwhile, Dinah, Curtis and the other trusted police officers are hiding out when they are attacked by Diaz's men. Curtis takes a hit for his boyfriend Nick, as he deflects it with the Mr. Terific suit. In the gunfight the officers struggler their way to fight Diaz's men, that is untill Dinah cries a hole into the wall and frees all the officers to escape. Back with Oliver, sorting out their differences for a moment, he and John infiltrate Diaz's Vertigo lab, where they fight their way through armed guards and they plant bombs throughout the lab. With one last arrow, Oliver and John leave the building and detonate the bombs, taking out Diaz's drug lab.
Back in the Arrow cave, John tells Oliver that is going alone, as he is leaving team Arrow. Dinah and Curtis have a talk, then Curtis makes ends with Nick on what happened in the gunfight. Lyla offers John a job at Argus. Back home Oliver watches the news as told by Quentin, and he discovers that Captain Hill and Attorney Armand are filing a lawsuit against Oliver for being the Green Arrow, and that being the reason he fired them. The episode ends with Diaz visiting Laurel, as he offers one last supply of Vertigo before they kiss.
First of all, when I first saw the trailer for this episode, I was doubting that this would be any good, however, this episode was better than I was expecting. In using the time of the episode to develop the sides of the Green Arrow mantle and who should use it, the episode channeled across clear reasons as to why Oliver should and shouldn't wear it. There were a lot of points made by both Oliver and John as to who should wear the hood, and they all made me think. I do have to say that the best scene, the best fight in the episode was the verbal argument that the two had in the Arrow cave. It expressed both of the character's feelings in ways which called back to the previous seasons; along with the acting, this was a well-constructed scene.
The other plot's in the episode were interesting, in their own ways. The plot with Black Siren was interesting. It further showed how Earth-2 Laurel is gaining the trust of Quentin, and how she is just trying to make the wound deeper in Quentin's back when she quadruple crosses him as we saw she was siding with Diaz, and not only that, she has an intimate relationship with him. The final plot in the episode with Dinah and Curtis was great. I do feel like that it was a little unnecessary with that small anti-vigilante views that were going around in the episode, as it all was dismissed at the end of the episode. However, the plot built climax in terms of creating a tightening the odds for Dinah, Curtis, and the other police officers.
The end of the episode with Oliver felt like the end to other past episodes in the season where someone has proof that Oliver is the Green Arrow. I feel like the season is running on the same couple of stories that are getting recycled, like disbandment of the team, identity crisis, and Rene getting injured. It feels like the season is running out of some ideas, which is a shame, as where they left the characters, there could be a lot that could be done.
The best performance in the episode was David Ramsey; he was awesome in the episode as John Diggle. The way that the character was portrayed where he was in a state of not knowing what he was doing was great. The episode made some great moments for the character, especially in that argument with Oliver, all of which Ramsey expressed to life. The rest of the cast was great in the episode. Starring in the episode we had Stephen Amell (Oliver/ Green Arrow), Emilly Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), Audrey Marie Anderson (Lyla Michaels), Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance), Katie Cassidy (Laurel/ Black Siren), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah/ Black Canary), Echo Kellum (Curtis/ Mr. Teriffic), Evan Roderick (Officer Nick), Tina Huang (Captain Hill), Pej Vahdat (Attorney Armand), David Nykl (Anatoly), and Kirk Acevedo (Ricardo Diaz).
In conclusion, this episode of Arrow was surprisingly well crafted, in terms of the film techniques used to create are a divide between Oliver and John over the mantle of the Green Arrow. With one of the best arguments in the show and an accelerating plot, the episode defined the low expectations I had going into the episode of this premise. I will give this episode an 8.5 out of 10.
