THE FLASH "RUN IRIS RUN" REVIEW

Season 4 Episode 16:

Hey everyone, a brand new episode of the Flash is out, and in this episode we see a reverse dynamic of the team where Iris gains the powers of Barry, becoming the Flash, as she experiences what Barry goes through on the daily, and Barry experiences what Iris goes through on the daily. Spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens up with Cisco and Harry conceiving ideas on how to stop DeVoe. The next day, Herry suggests to the team that he builds a thinking cap like what DeVoe had, juices it up with dark matter, therefore he can out think DeVoe. Cisco tells Harry that this is a bad idea, while the Ralph supports this idea, meaning it can save him. Ralph leaves and Iris goes to talk to him.  Ralph tells Iris that she has no idea what being on the front lines, not knowing if you will live feels like. Meanwhile, at the Central City bank, a robbery is going down where a man with fire powers is stealing money. Another man, named Mathew Kim, talks down the robbery. He gets pushed aside, and takes his powers, passing them to someone else. At the crime scene, Cisco and Joe question the robber, where they learn that he got his powers in the initial particle accelerator explosion. Back at STAR Labs, the team looks over the security footage where they see Mathew take the powers of the robber, and he also took the 405 bus in October, and he is the 10th bus meta.

Ralph helps Harry put together the thinking cap, and it works for a bit until it catches on fire. At the hospital, Joe and Iris question Mathew, who holds a knife up to Iris' neck, not wanting to be questioned. The Flash shows and saves Iris. Mathew touches Barry and Iris. Barry attempts to chase after Mathew, however, he lost his speed, and Iris finds that she has the super speed. At STAR Labs, Iris runs laps in her new purple lightning super speed. Iris runs on the super treadmill, and Barry season one style falls off. The team gets an alert that there is a building on fire. Iris changes into Caitlin's clothes and runs to the building. Iris saves some civilians and attempts to put out the fire. She fails to do so and gets trapped by some ruble. Cisco vibes to rescue her. Caitlin does a check on Iris who is fine. Cisco goes to talk to Harry and agrees to help him with his thinking cap, as they agree to not use dark matter to power the hat.

Iris goes to training and tells Barry that Caitlin cannot find a way to replicate Mathew's powers. The team gets an alert, so Barry and Iris go to the central hub. They find out that Jaco Birch (the man who got the fire powers from the robber via Mathew) is reeking havoc in the city. Cisco presents Iris a suit he quickly made. Iris suits up and runs into action. Mathew tries to talk to Jaco, but Iris saves him in time. Iris attempts to run around Jaco, however, the fire is too hot. Jaco then turns into a fire tornado, about to kill thousands. Harry puts on the thinking cap and convinces an idea. Iris follows the idea as she runs out to the ocean, gathers a tidal wave, and runs back to Central City with the wave following her, as she runs out of the way, taking down the fiery inferno of Jaco.

Back at STAR Labs, Mathew apologizes to team Flash, and he tells them he wanted to make a difference. Barry asks Iris if she wants to lose her powers, Iris says that Central City needs their Flash, so Mathew switches their powers, as Barry gains his speed. Barry offers Mathew a position on team Flash as he tells him that he can help them take down DeVoe. Iris and Ralph reconcile. At their apartment, Iris tells Barry that the Flash is not defined by his speed, but his values, which is why she decided to let Barry have his powers back. Iris goes on her season one Flash blog and writes a new article. The episode ends with Harry and Cisco charging the thinker cap. Harry puts it one and says "Janet Petty" and "Edwin Gauss" the final two bus meta's.

Overall, this episode was interesting. We, first of all, saw Iris that was one of the most exciting parts of the episode. There were nice details to this, the purple lightning being a reference to the Tornado Twin's lightning; the Tornado Twins being Iris and Barry's children. The suit of Iris was cool, it resembles the XS suit, Iris' granddaughter. However, the episode had many faults in this story. My biggest complaint is that the episode felt like it wasted a little too much time for Iris to get her powers. I feel as though this should have been done earlier in the episode so we could get more growing moments with Iris as she explores the full extent of the powers. I also do wish Iris got some more obstacles as the Flash. We really on saw her succeed once, I do feel like a robbery she foiled in the episode, between the fire and end fight, would have added some more to the character's journey, as that would have been a scene where she was fighting someone in. Anyway, the concept of Iris as a speedster was great, with an alright setup, as it was fun seeing the reversed roles, however, I wish we saw some more. \

The second plot of the episode was interesting. Harry and Cisco developing the thinking cap.  The arguments that were laid out for why this should be done and should not be done were clearly defined, so there was a clear and justified divide in the team. We saw them develop the cap by the end of the episode which was cool. I do think that Ralph had a good arc in the episode, we saw him reluctant to get involved, and by the end of the episode he saw the fearlessness of Iris and decided that he can not just hide. Let's talk about the ending of the episode. Harry calls out two names. Janet Petty is a character that does not exist in the DC Comics plethora of characters, however, she could be an extremely deep cut. Edwin Gauss is a character from the comics known as the Folded Man, who first appeared in the Flash vol #2 issue 153. The character is the youngest graduate from MIT, and he can travel between dimensions. Helpful to team Flash to get into DeVoe's lair which is speculated to be in a different dimension.

Candice Patton was good in the episode portraying Iris with powers. Patton gave this vibe of season one Barry in this episode, the way that the character was excited to have powers. I do feel like the episode could have built on that a little more. There was also the references to Iris' reporting job which I kind of just forgot about. The cast of the episode was great as always, starring we had Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ The Flash), Leonardo Nam (Mathew/ Melting Point), Carlos Valdes (Cisco/ Vibe), Tom Cavanagh (Harry Wells), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin/ Killer Frost), Hartley Sawyer (Ralph/ Elongated Man), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Max Adler (Jaco Birch), and Oliver Rice (Erik Frye).

In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was a neat reverse scenario of the show as a general. The show did have some pacing issues as it wasted too much time at the beginning of the episode to explore Iris as a speedster, which would have been interesting. The episode was redeemed with the side plot, the acting, the camera techniques used. I will give this episode of the Flash a 7.5 out of 10.
