BLACK LIGHTNING "EQUINOX: THE BOOK OF FATE" REVIEW
Season 1 Episode 7:
Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Black Lightning directed by Billie Woodruff, where we pick up after last weeks episodes where Anissa discovers that her father is Black Lightning, so this episode follows through with the events of that. Spoilers ahead for this episode of the show, let's recap.
The episode opens up with Lynn checking up on Anissa after being knocked out by her father, Jefferson, who talks to Gambi about Tobias being back. At the police station, Jefferson and Lynn describe the criminals who held her hostage. Outside, Lynn and Jefferson have a talk about not knowing how Anissa had powers, and that Jenifer might manifest powers. Gambi visits Lady Eve who hands Gambi a box to give to Toledo. Meanwhile, Jefferson and Anissa have a talk about Alvin and his work. Back home, Jenifer notices to awkwardness between Anissa and Jefferson, but the two manage to get around it without revealing their superhero showdown.
Anissa goes to see her mother who is hiding in the Black Lightning lair, knowing that the criminals that captured her are still out there. The mother and daughter have a talk where Lynn tells Anissa that the reason why she and Jefferson separated was that Jefferson was Black Lightning. Anissa goes to visit Alvin's friend at work and discovers that he was killed in a car crash a couple days ago. Meanwhile, at Joey Toledo's lair, a mysterious masked bandit comes in and kills Toledo with a gun. The bandit removes his mask to reveal Gambi, who places the box that Lady Eve gave him on Toledo's body.
Finding out Toledo is dead, Tobias opens that box that was on his chest to reveal the "fairy dust", the crushed bones of Albinoes. Tobias realizes that Eve is sending out a message to Tobias, so he needs to take action. In the Black Lightning cave, Jefferson gets a call from Inspector Henderson about the death of Toledo. So Jefferson meets Henderson where Jeff is tipped that Toledo was opening up a new club, and without Toledo there, Tobias might be there. At Gambi's store, Anissa comes to see Gambi who gives her sketches of a super suit that he is creating, as suggested by Lynn. At the club, Jefferson is fully suited and he confronts Tobias and his possy. Black Lightning shocks and zaps all of Tobias' goons one by one. Deleting one of the bullets, Black Lightning hits Tobias and his sister, Tori. Jefferson takes down Syonide, who escapes. Jefferson sees Tobias escorted to an escape, as he witnesses Tori dying. Meanwhile, Lady Eve is killed with weapons that shoot electricity. On the news, the death of Lady Eve is reported by Amanda Davis where the blame for her death is on Black Lightning. Jefferson has a talk with Anissa telling her that he will train her.
The episode ends with Lala coming back to life after seeing the ghost of Lawanda.
Overall, this episode of Black Lightning was exciting. The main plot with Tobias still out was exciting. We saw the rift with Jefferson and Gambi start to form, and that is only of the knowledge that Gambi knew Tobias was alive. We still have to see the reaction from Jefferson when he discovers that Gambi has been in contact with Lady Eve, and his possible involvement in the death of his father, Alvin. In the episode we explored everyone's views on Anissa becoming a superhero. As reluctant as Lynn is about Anissa becoming a hero, she knows that she will never stop until she succeeds. Gambi is developing the suit for Anissa, which we saw a preview of before the series started. So in the next couple episode, we will see Anissa suit up in the new suit as Thunder. With Black Lightning being public enemy in Freeland number one, Anissa will have to step up to become the new hero of Freeland. I have to say that the best scene in the episode was that end fight with Black Lightning against Tobias' possy. That was an amazing sequence. First of all the choreography was well played out, and the lighting complemented that well. With the darkroom only lighted up by the blue and yellow of the suit and lightning, we got gorgeous shots, which were a marvel to look at.
Nafessa William was brilliant in this episode of Black Lightning. We did not see her back in action this episode, however, it was great seeing her reaction to all the repercussions of the events that happened in the previous episode, such as Lynn accepting that Anissa will be a hero and that Jefferson has to train her, as well as Gambi making her suits. Nearly all of the superhero origin conventions for came in this episode, with the innocent person being killed of her actions, that being Alvin's friend. The rest of the cast in the episode was great, starring in the episode we had Cress Willaims (Jefferson Pierce/ Black Lightning), Christine Adamas (Lynn Pierce), James Remar (Peter Gambi), China Ann McClain (Jenifer Pierce), Damon Gupton (Inspector Henderson), Jill Scott (Lady Eve), Marvin Jones III (Tobias Whale), Charlbi Dean Kriek (Syonide), Edwina Findley Dickerson (Tori), Eric Mendenhall (Joey Toledo), William Catlett (Lala), Tracey Bonner (Lawanda White), and Amanda Davis.
In conclusion, this episode of Black Lightning was exciting in the way it starts to set up the start of the superhero journey with Anissa as Thunder. I am loving the family aspect between Black Lightning and Thunder, and I can not wait to see that grow. With awesome visual techniques and music, this episode was a pleasure to watch. I will give this episode of Black Lightning an 8 out of 10. What did you think of the episode? Let me know by dropping a comment below.
