We are here with the spoiler review of Star Wars The Last Jedi, and when I mean spoilers, I mean spoilers, so please do not read this if you have not seen the film, you can check out the non-spoiler review of the film. So let's quickly recap the film and then discuss the good and the bad of the film.
The film focuses on Rey visiting an old Luke Skywalker in exile on Ach-To. After having difficulty getting through to Luke, R2D2 manage to persuade Luke to train Rey in the ways f the force. After some training, Luke discovers the full extent of Rey's abilities and how she can be influenced by the dark side. Rey finds a force cave on Ach-To where she experiences a force vision of a mirror realm herself. While on her trip, Rey has force connections with Kylo Ren where he tells her the truth about Luke, which scares her. Rey confronts Luke on this but he tells her what really happened on the night Ben Solo turned to Kylo Ren. Rey believes that she can redeem Kylo Ren, so she sets off with Chewbacca and R2D2 to do so. Meanwhile Luke gets a visiting from force ghost Yoda.
Meanwhile, the Leia led Resistance is evacuating their base from an attack from the first order. When Leia is injured, Vice Admiral Holdo takes charge of the Resistance. Not agreeing with Holdo's decisions, Poe Dameron sends out ex-Strom Tropper, Finn, along with mechanic Rose and Poe's own droid, BB8. The three set out on a quest on a clock to find a hacker to stop the First Order from tracking them so the Resistance can go to the outer rim to seek out new allies. Rose, Finn, and BB8 go to Canto Bight, where they meet hacker, DJ.
Rey meets Kylo at the First Order new Star Cruiser where Kylo brings Rey to Snoke. Rey has a confrontation with Snoke and Snoke orders Kylo to kill Rey, however Kylo kills Snoke instead, and Rey and Kylo fight the guards of the Snoke. Finn, Rose, DJ, and BB8 are on the same ship where they are attempting to turn off the First Order tracker. DJ swaps sides and turns Finn and Rose in, to the first order. With the Resistance escaping to nearby planet, Crait, Holdo uses her main ship to destroy the primary Star Cruiser. Finn and Rose are close to the impact and manage to fight Captain Phasma and escape her with BB8 as they travel to Crait. Kylo offers Rey to help him lead the galaxy in the First Order, however, Rey declines and then the two have a duel. After dueling, the Skywalker lightsaber Rey was using splits in half as Kylo flees to Crait to be the Supreme leader of the First Order.
On Crait, the First Order closes in on the Resistance in their base. The Resistance sends out a signal for help from others while, Finn, Poe, Rose, and other pilots fight against the First Order and their weapon to destroy the Resistance base. The Falcon shows up with Chewbacca, R2D2, Rey, and porgs are in it as they fight some First Order ships. The Resistance starts to lose as everyone loses hope. Leia then sees her brother Luke come in as she greets him. Luke steps out onto the battlefield while everyone flees to the facility. Luke pulls out his blue lightsaber as Kylo commands the First Order to fire everything at Luke, but nothing happens. Kylo comes to the ground and fights Luke, but no attack works for Kylo. Kylo tells Luke he is the "Last Jedi", but Luke tells him otherwise, we then see that the Luke that Kylo was fighting was a projection from the real Luke on Ach-To.
The hologram Luke disappears. On Ach-To, Luke has one last look at the double Tatooine-like sunset before he becomes one with the force.
Poe leads the small Resistance through an exit which is made by Rey and her force abilities. The resistance flees Crait on the Falcon. Rey tells Leia that she felt Luke's passing, but it was more peaceful, and Leia tells Rey that she felt it too. The film ends with a kid that Rose and Finn met on Canto Bight grabbing a broom with the force, wearing a Resistance ring as he looks to the sky.
Initial thoughts on the film. I absolutely loved this, it was a brilliant film which took what worked with Star Wars and built on that. The plots of the film were both interesting in their own right, however, that Luke and Rey plot line was more interesting than the Resistance storyline, both had high stakes and got me invested, but at times when the film cut to Finn and Rose, I wanted to go back to Rey and Luke. What worked with the Rey and Luke plotline is the mysteries that lied in the plot line. We were all waiting for, Rey's parents, Snoke's identity, and Ben's turn to Kylo. All of those plotlines were answered in some capacity. But the question of Ben turning to Kylo was the most serviced out of the three in the film. Seeing that flashback was insane, and how bad of a teacher Luke was for this to happen, and it was great development for the character. I was watching a review by Jenny Nicholson and she said that Luke would have been an all-around bad master for some of the Jedi (Knights of Ren) to believe that Luke would try to kill Kylo, thus joining with Kylo Ren.
Evaluating the film as a whole, there was some amazing stuff that made the film. One of coolest things about this film was the all the creatures that were in the film. The Porgs were not the Ewoks of this film, they were great side characters (or full meals of Chewbacca). From the Crystal Ice wolves in the film to the rich pimp like characters in Canto Bight, the effort placed into all these creatures was great and it made gave the universe a foreign placing that would be awesome to visit.
There were some brilliant camera techniques used in the film from the similar symmetry of the Original Trilogy. The most notable one for me was the shot at the end of Luke looking at the two suns on Ach-To. It was a call back to A New Hope when Luke looked at the twin suns of Tatoinne. The meaning of the shot is to show how far Luke has come on this journey, from when his Uncle and Aunt bought R2 on Tatoinee, to when he had a holographic fight with his nephew. But the journey of Luke in the living world has come full circle, and it was a great way to show that concept with the twin suns.
Speaking of symmetry with to the Original Trilogy, the music in the film is reminiscent of the Original Trilogy. Being scored by John Williams there are a few memorable themes in the film such as the Emporer Throne room score being used when Rey and Kylo visit Snoke, and the Luke theme when Luke passes. There were others, but the overall music score of the film was no exception to the other Star Wars films, it brought the story to life, and that is thanks to the brilliance of John Williams.
In the non-spoiler review, I talked about how my favorite character was a spoiler, and that was because my favorite character was Yoda. The great Jedi master himself returned as a force ghost in this film. For a moment I forgot about expecting a Force ghost Yoda, so I was surprised by his appearance. Since the Force Awakens, I wanted the return of Yoda as a force ghost and it happened in the Last Jedi which was amazing. With Frank Oz returned to voice Yoda, bringing the character back to his good old days. I do have to admit the character does look a little unusual as the film decided to use a puppet instead of CG, which worked, but that is the reason why Yoda was not transparent blue the whole time. The character had his wise and senile characteristics from the Empire Strikes Back, with Yoda tapping Luke on the head with the walking stick, to the lesson he told Luke that Rey has everything she needs. That was a literal thing and metaphorical meaning. The metaphor is that Rey can unlock the Jedi ways inside her, and the literal meaning was the Rey did take all the books and Yoda was laughing when Luke freaked out about the Tree being on fire.
One of the reasons this film was a masterpiece is because of the cast. Everyone put in their effort to play their role, from the small roles to the big everyone was amazing in immersing you to be in the adventure. I was blown away by Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, he was absolutely amazing in the film, bringing to life the role of the complex character with so much depth and layer., I was definitely blown away by his performance in this film and it shows how great of an actor he is. Daisy Ridley, in this film, was amazing as Rey. It was great seeing how Ridley could bring to life the character in these situations of the story. From what could have been a dull character, is now a remarkable character in this saga thanks to the performance that is shown on screen.
Mark Hamill, this is a masterful performance from Hamill. It was insane seeing how the character was illustrated on screen by Hamill in a compelling way which made me curious about the last 20 years of history we have not seen of the character. Mark Hamill in the Last Jedi is arguably the best performance given in any Star Wars movie.
The Last Jedi was a solid improvement from the Force Awakens regarding the Original Trilogy characters. There was a story about this legendary characters in this film. I absolutely loved Carrie Fisher in this film. She played Leia in a neat way which showed how her story is progressing, and it is sad that Carrie Fisher is not around anymore. ALso bringing amazing performance in tis film we had John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Issac (Poe Dameron), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Jimmy Vee (R2D2), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Tim Rose & Tom Kane (Admiral Ackbar), Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata), Anthony Daniels (C3PO), Laura Dern (Vice Admiral Holdo), Domhall Gleeson (General Jux), Benicio Del Toro (DJ), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), and Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke).
In conclusion Star Wars the Last Jedi is a masterpiece of a film which has been brilliantly crafted by the director, Rian Johnson who immersed me in this film with the breathtaking visual techniques, to the character development and performances the intense plot. There are a few flaws in this film, but an overall success for me. I will score Star Wars the Last Jedi an 8 out of 10.
I would like to hear your thoughts on the film, whether it is good or bad, I would really like to know. The next week will be basically all Star Wars, we will discuss everything from the characters, Rey's parents, and EpisodeIX later on, so please, subscribe to get all that stuff. As always thanks for reading, take care.
