AGENTS OF SHIELD "ORIENTATION" REVIEW

Season 5 Episode 1-2

We are finally back with Agents of SHIELD on tv and this time we are in space. So spoilers ahead for the premiere of Season 5 of Agents of SHIELD, let’s recap.

The episode focuses on Coulson, Simmons, Mack, and Yoyo finding themselves in space. The Agents meet Virgil who tells them that they are in a space prison ruled by the Kree. After encounter weird Kree dog type creatures, Virgil dies and Daisy saves the team. Mack and Yoyo are captured by some Kree guards which Daisy saves them. Meanwhile, May encounters a man, Deke who informs May of what is going on. May and Deke meet with the rest of the gang.Deke had a deal with Virgil to save Coulson and his team. May and Simons steal a spaceship and they find Earth, however, it is destroyed, as the team realizes that they are in a dystopian future in space.

The team meets with a friend of Virgil, Tess who tells Coulson that Virgil looks up to Coulson as a type of God, waiting for his arrival. Coulson, Yoyo, and Mack get a job in this prison type area, working for a man named, Grill, who gave the three ID’s so they would not get caught by the Kree. Meanwhile, Simmons saves an injured person and is recognized for her efforts. Simmons is taken to meet the Kree leader who turns her into his slave with some technology. May and Tess also save Coulson, Yoyo, and Mack from a man with a gun. In this space, facility Daisy meets with Deke and she finds him plugging himself into the framework. She follows after him and Deke tells Daisy that she destroyed the Earth in the past.

Overall this episode was an interesting episode to start off the season. Being stuck in space and time is an interesting concept in the show and definitely something we have not seen in the show or the universe at all. The time placement of the season feels like an antique which is to explain why the Agents of SHIELD are not in Avengers Infinity War. I am definitely excited for what the premiere set up for the season and it will be great to see how the team gets back home in the place and time, after saving Simmons, and who knows where Fitz fits into this.

The twist witch Daisy being the destroyer of the Earth was a brilliant twist and one which focuses on the show. I know everyone was thinking Thanos destroyed the Earth, but Daisy is a good second choice, as it centers around the show.

The cast of the episode was good. We were introduced to a few new characters such as Jeff Ward as Deke. I enjoyed the performance of the character and his interactions with the team. He seems like he will form a relationship with Daisy in the season, but maybe not. Eve Harlow played Tess in the episode, a new character who was interesting. She seems like she will be an enjoyable character for the most part of the show, and I can’t wait to see her guide the Agents around the facility. I liked Deniz Akdeniz as Virgil, well the five seconds we saw of him. The episode also introduced us to Pruitt Taylor Vince as Grill, the boss of Coulson, Yoyo, and Mack. He seems like he will be a fun character changing his mind about saving Coulson and his crew or not.

The show I feel would have done well if this episode introduced a new comic book character like last season. It would be cool if we saw someone like Vance Astro on the show. The origin of the character would have to change, but having a new superhero on the team would be cool. The returning cast of the episode was great we had Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson), Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May), Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson), Henry Simmons (Mack Mackenzie), Natalia Cordova-Buckley (Yoyo Rodriguez), and Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma Simmons).

In conclusion, this episode of Agents of SHIELD was an awesome introduction to the season. The cast is the reason why many people are invested in the season and I am excited to see their development. I will give this episode an 8.5 out of 10. Please comment your thoughts on the episode down below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
