RIVERDALE "THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN" REVIEW

Chapter 17:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new review of Riverdale season two episode 4. So spoilers ahead for the episode if you haven't seen it let's recap.

The episode opens up with Jughead who is at the library and gets some books to try to research the Black Hood. Meanwhile, Jughead is out practicing with his new gun that he acquired from Dilton Doily. At the Lodge household, Hermione at Hiram are mad at Veronica because of the video that Archie put out threatening to the black hood. Meanwhile, at the Cooper parents are mad at Betty is she helped Polly run away from home. Alice is especially mad as he is worried about her children.

Fred is also mad at Archie for threatening the Black Hood. He tells Archie to take the video down which Archie has done, however it keeps getting re-uploaded. Meanwhile, at the South-side, Jughead is getting a call from Betty which he doesn't pick, as he sees some kids at the South-side high wanting to beat up Archie after the video he made threatening the Black Hood, and the people of South-side see the Black Hero as a hero.

At Riverdale high, Veronica has a talk with Archie about why he made the video. Archie also has a talk with the principal about the video he made. The principal tells Archie that he is disbanding the Riverdale football team due to Archie's actions. Meanwhile, Betty receives a letter from the Black Hood. She shows Kevin the letter which says that the Black Hood is doing everything for Betty and that he was inspired by her speech from the season one finale. Betty also reserved a mysterious code from the Black Hood, which on the letter stated that Betty is the only person who can crack the code.

Betty goes home and gives her mother the mysterious code, not the letter. Alice freaks out and shows Sheriff Keller. Alice then goes on to publish the code in the newspaper. At Riverdale high, Reggie and the rest of the red circle are mad at Archie that he go the Football team disbanded, so they leave him. Dilton sticks with Archie and gives him an address to get some stuff to be a vigilante.

Veronica talks to her father, Hiram about telling Archie to create the video, which he denies to have done. Meanwhile, Jughead is with Toni trying to track the mysterious code that Betty got. Meanwhile, Archie goes to a shop Dilton directed him to. Archie picks up a new gun and some spray paint. The next day Jughead meets up with Betty and the two plan to try crack to code later on. At Riverdale high, Archie finds out that Veronica made red circle t-shirts which she handed out to everyone.

That night. Betty, Jughead, Kevin, and Toni meet in Jughead's house and try to crack the code which they cannot do. Meanwhile, Archie is out on the South-side of Riverdale. He sprays red circles on buildings. Archie is threatened by South-side high students with knives. Archie pulls out his gun and the South-side high Serpents run away from Archie.

The next day at school, Archie is suspected by Sheriff Keller and the principle for pulling a gun out on people in the south side. Archie denies the claims and the police search in his locker, which there is no weapon. Later at night, Archie calls Veronica and tells her to go to school and get his gun that he hid in a toilet.

Jughead goes to betty house where he confronts her about the letter she got from the Black Hood. Betty admits that she is scared that she is the cause of the Black Hood's actions, and that Archie would hate her if he knew the Black Hood shot his dad for her. Jughead comforts her and tells her otherwise. Betty then gets the idea that the mysterious code is meant for her to hack, so the two go to a library and look at a codebook Betty used to read a lot. So the two start to crack the code.

Meanwhile, Veronica visits Archie and she is mad that he had a gun. She tells him that she threw the gun into the river. Reggie and the rest of the Red Circle come over with pizza and decide to rejoin the Red Circle. The South-side high serpents show up to Archie's house and challenge the Red Circle to a fight.

Meanwhile, at the Riverdale town meeting, Alice and Fred have a debate while the South-side fights the Red Circle. In the fight, the Red Circle starts to lose, Dilton gets stabbed in the leg which causes Veronica to fire a gun in the air to stop the Serpents from attacking and they flee. Reggie quickly takes Dilton to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Jughead and Betty crack the code and they find out that the Black Hood might be at the town meeting, so the two quickly rush to the hall and ring the fire alarm to evacuate everyone. Betty and Jughead go to the Copper house where Betty shows her parents, Sheriff Keller and the Mayor the letter that she got from the Black Hood.

At Archie's house, Archie is being taken care of by Veronica who tells him that she didn't drop the gun in the river as she knew that it would come in handy. But Archie and Veronica do go to the river to drop the gun for good.

The episode ends with Betty in her room, where she gets a call from the Black Hood.

Initial thoughts on the episode, the episode brought some really good looking scenes and also maintained an interesting story. The overarching story in the episode relating to the Black Hood and Betty grasped my curiosity. The mystery of Betty in connection to the Black Hood has not been solved but we do know that the Black Hood heard Betty's speech, that speech being the one she said in the season one finale. So I will post a separate theory on possible Black Hood suspects later on.

This was stylistically a great episode. That fight with Archie, the Red Circle, and the South-side high serpents was great. From the cinematography taking shots of our heroes on the ground to the colors in the sky behind the two sides was great. It still maintained a great action in that scene portraying what a high school Football team would look like fighting a gang. So that fight scene was one of my favorite scenes in the episode and maybe even this season so far.

Lili Reinhart was amazing in the episode as Betty Copper. I liked the story arc that the character had n the episode with the shock she had that she inspired the Black Hood to go on his killing spree. It was also great to see how lost Betty was into taking action with this as she knows the right thing but she fears telling anyone of losing friendships. like with Archie.

The rest of the cast in the episode was exceptional, we had KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Cole Sprouse (Jughead), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge), Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge), Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz), Madchen Amick (Alice Cooper), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews), Major Curda (Dilton Doiley), and Charles Melton (Reggie Mantle).

Overall, this episode of Riverdale stylistically looked good, from the fight scene, the lightning strikes used as lighting. The story for the episode was relatively interesting, and there were a few more clues dropped as to who the Black Hood may be. I will give 'The town that dreaded sundown' an 8 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
