LEGENDS OF TOMORROW "PHONE HOME" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 4:

So for the Halloween special episode of Legends of Tomorrow, we got an E.T style episode involving ray Palmer in 1988. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens up with a flashback to 1988 where we find 8-year-old Ray Palmer roaming around a government facility trying to find something. He attempts to open a door, however, is killed by the agency in trying to find secrets.

On board the Waverider, Ray is trying to make the team to trust exercises. Ray lets Mick fall into his arms to prove that they both have trust, however, Mick falls flat on the ground as Ray evaporated from existence. The team asks Gideon what happened to Ray and she tells the team that Ray went missing on October 31st, 1988. Sara plots a course for October 30th, 1988 to save Ray. Ray then evaporates back into existence.

The team gets ready to go out and look out for 8-year-old Ray in 1988. The team spies on young Ray and find that he is stealing some candy, something Ray would never do. Nate is looking at a DeLorean when he sees young Ray getting bullied. Ray and Zari catch up to Nate and decide to see what young Ray is doing. Ray sneaks around his house to look at what his younger self is doing, and he finds out that he adopted a baby Dominator like ET.

Back on the Waverider,  the team discovers that the Dominators are not aberrations but are from this time from outer space. Jax talks with Martin who is hiding something from Jax which he can sense through their Firestorm bond. Meanwhile, Zari and Ray go into Ray's old home in 88 to take away the baby Dominator. Ry reminisces about his childhood days. The two then open the closet in Ray's room to find the baby Dominator and before they can take it, young Ray comes into the house. Zari quickly hides under the bed, and Ray shrinks down and poses as an action figure, which the Dominator plays with. Young Ray and the baby Dominator go and watch singing in the rain.

As Nate said, Ray's "hot mom" comes home and young Ray quickly hides the Dominator. She growls him for skipping school, which he apologizes for. Nate and Amaya quickly distract Ray's mother by acting as animal inspectors. Young Ray quickly takes the older shrunk down Ray with the baby Dominator, and he runs away. Zari quickly follows him and tells him to stop, but he ignores her.

Back on the Waverider, Jax tells Mick that Martin is hiding something from the team. The two discover that there have been trips made using the escape pod that has had their history erased. Mick speculates that Martin is secretly working for the Time Bureau. Jax and Mick also find plans for some communication device that Martin has been working on.

Back in 88, Sara gets captured in a web by an adult Dominator, who looks inside her memories. The Dominator leaves Sara who contacts everyone and warns them that the mother of the baby Dominator is coming. Meanwhile, Zari finds young Ray in a tree fort, she becomes his friends however they are captured by the government.

On the Waverider, Mick and Jax confront Martin about working for the Time Bureau, but Martin tells them that he has been building communication devices for him to talk to Lilly who is about to give birth. Apologizing to Martin, Jax and Mick take the Wavewirder to go visit Lily.

Meanwhile, Nate and Amaya are walking in the woods where they discuss their relationship. Nate goes off the check on Ray’s mother while Amaya continues to walk in the woods. Nate goes to see Ray’s mother who starts to seduce Nate, who freaks out a bit. Amaya finds some dripping substance in the woods and looks up to find Ray’s mother tangled in a web. Amaya rushes off to Ray’s house where she stops the Dominator who shapeshifted in Nate's mind to be Ray’s mother. The Dominator quickly runs away with Nate and Amaya chasing after her.

Meanwhile, Martin, Jax, and Mick go to Central City 2017 where they see Martin’s daughter, Lily giving birth. Jax apologizes to Martin for nearly making him miss his first grandchild’s birth.

In the government base, the baby Dominator is being spied on. Zari is captured by the government and Ray goes to normal size and saves Zari. Ray and Zari save young Ray and go to save the baby Dominator who mind controls the government to perform a song from singing in the rain. Zari, and young Ray, with the baby Dominator, steal some bikes and drive away. Zari uses the wind powers of her totem to make the bikes fly, and Ray catches up to their flying. Ray, Zari, young Ray and the baby Dominator meets with Sara, Nat, and Amaya. The mother Dominator shows up, so young Ray takes the baby Dominator to its mother, saying goodbye to its only true friend. The Dominators leave; leaving everyone else crying.

Back home Nate and Ray apologize to Ray’s mother about the mess they left the house in with their fight with the Dominator. Zari has a talk with young Ray. Zari offers for her and the Legends to go trick or treating with Ray. So the team suits up and help young Ray out.

Back on the Waverider Zari and Ray find out they have a lot of things in common, so they decide to watch singing in the rain together. Ray goes to get some popcorn where Jax tells him that Martin may be leaving, so he needs his help to “break up the firestorm matrix”.

So first things first, I have to say this is my favorite episode of the series. I bought a lot of heart, action, and humor in the episode. I liked seeing the baby Dominator in the episode, and how he bonded with Ray like ET and Elliot in ET, which this episode is a huge homage to, with the title being a quote from ET. The scene where young Ray says goodbye to gumball, the baby Dominator was a really great scene that built upon the charcter of Ray and showing a nicer side to him.

Talking about the ending with Jax asking Ray to split apart the Firestorm matrix. This is alluding to Victor Garber, the actor of Martin Stein leaving the show. So when he leaves, the character included, the charcter will be rendered useless as a hero without Stein as he cant turn into Firestorm. So Jax will most likely be successful into becoming Firestorm himself which will be interesting to see. Having Jax become Firestorm will allow the charcter to stay on the show and be useful.

Brandon Routh was great to see in the episode. I enjoyed seeing him take the center stage of the episode and taking a look into his upbringing and where he got today. It was fun seeing him reminisce over his childhood like playing Zelda. We have not seen too much of Ray in the Arrowverse and this episode did him so much justice.  I also enjoyed Jack Fisher as young Ray Palmer in the episode, I think he played the part of young Ray well, in his mannerisms shown in the show.

Tala Ashe was enjoyable in the episode, I liked seeing her character evolve and who else hopes she keeps the suit she was wearing at the end. The rest of the cast in the episode was great, we had Caity Lotz (Sara/ White Canary), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya/Vixen), Nick Zano (Nate/ Citizen Steel), Susie Abromeit (Mrs. Palmer), Victor Garber (Martin Stein), Franz Durham (Jax/ Firestorm), Christina Brucato (Lily Stein), and Dominic Purcell (Mick/Heatwave).

Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was an enjoyable, humorous, action-packed homage to ET which was executed amazingly. This is by far my favorite episode of Legends of Tomorrow. I will give 'phone home' a 9 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
