STAR WARS EPISODE IX TEASER TRAILER BREAKDOWN
After nearly a year of no Star Wars films, the teaser trailer (and title) for Star Wars Episode IX has arrived as a part of Star Wars Celebration 2019. JJ Abrams has returned to direct the film, concluding his story that was set up in the Force Awakens. This teaser shows off a lot of new footage, the returning characters, and as I said before, the title reveal, which I will all break down, so let's get on with it.
The trailer opens up with Rey (Daisy Ridley) on a sand planet, as she ignites the Skywalker family lightsaber, and runs towards a new imperial tie fighter racing towards her, as she flips over it.
To make one thing clear, I believe that the tie fighter is piloted by Kylo Ren in this scene. The coloring and the design stray away from a regular tie fighter, and every sith has had their unique tie fighter in every trilogy with the longer design.
The setting of this scene is very ambiguous, as there are two notable sand planets and it seems like the film would go back to one of them instead of introducing a new sand planet. The planets that Rey could be on is either:
- Jakku (where Rey grew up)
- Tatooine (where Luke grew up)
Both planets have significance to the franchise and the characters, but I believe this is Tatooine. Thematically it makes more sense for it to be Tatooine, as the planet has a lot of significance to the Skywalker family and the franchise as a whole. Rey may be on the planet to find some of Obi-Wan's old relics. This would also make sense as to why Kylo Ren may want to get to some Jedi relic before Rey, which would make sense if he is in the tie fighter.
Or maybe Rey just wants a drink from the Mos Eisley Cantina in this scene (which would be awesome to see on screen once again).
Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is on a planet slaughtering people like his grandfather. This planet seems like a new planet, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a part of some montage where we see the First Order go over the galaxy search for anyone who has any knowledge of where the remaining Resistance has escaped to.
Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac) are on the same planet that Rey was at the beginning of the trailer, that being most likely Tatooine. Tatooine seems like a more conventional candidate as seen by the rock cliffs which resemble the cliffs that the Jawas would use to find hunting material.
The two on the same terrain that we saw Rey on at the beginning of the trailer, hints towards that they maybe are searching for Rey who may be somewhat lost, or being hunted.
Kylo Ren is welding his old helmet back together since he destroyed it in the Last Jedi. I feel like this scene is a good allegory for what is happening in real life with this film. JJ Abrams is course correcting the trilogy to his original idea that he planned in the Force Awakens but was taken off course with the 'let the past die' attitude of Rian Johnson's Last Jedi.
Everyone's favorite soccer ball droid, BB8 is back in the film, as expected, and is one of the last remaining droids in the Resistance. Next to it is a new droid named "Dio" who will act as a sidekick to BB8. The droid is apparently a repurposed ID10, which shows that the Resistance is recycling whatever they can to gather more resources.
The design of the droid does look really neat, and it almost looks like something that Finn from Adventure Time would scrap together, especially with the black lines on top nearly resembling a face.

The smoothest Star Wars character in the galaxy is back, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) in the films, and he is piloting his old ship alongside Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo). I am assuming that Lando is coming for a proper grieving session for Han Solo considering that in the Last Jedi there was no funeral for the character. It will be interesting to see what else he will do in the film since along with Chewbacca and the droids, he is the only currently living character and actor from the original trilogy in the franchise.
On Tatooine, we see Poe and C3PO (Anthony Daniels) racing away on a land skiff as the First Order fires on them. I am assuming that Finn is on the skiff with them, and maybe they are searching for Rey who is lost on Tatooine, while also escaping this confrontation.
It will be interesting to see how Poe will get the skiff. Whether he will find this nearby the abandoned ruble of Jabba's sail barge next to the Sarlacc Pit.
In this shot, who I assume is Leia (Carrie Fisher ✞) is holding on the Rebel medal she presented to Han and Luke back in A New Hope for their efforts in blowing up the Death Star 1.0. It will be interesting to see if anyone mentions the fact that Chewbacca was never presented a medal in the original film considering he did as much as Han in the Battle of Yavin.
This scene seems like it will be heavily emotional, with Leia reflecting on her fallen friends in the past year that this trilogy has taken place.

General Leia is hugging Rey. It will be interesting to see what happens with the character of Leia with Carrie Fishers passing in December 2016. She had no footage filmed for episode nine, and there have been many rumors and a lot of speculation from various sources saying that pre-existing footage will be used, or CG will be used on another actor, or the character won't be in the film at all.
I guess we can cross the last one off because we see her in this scene here. I do have a theory that in the course of the film we might see Leia have an off-screen death, with a funeral to commemorate her. It would act as a send-off for Fisher, and the character, and could be something emotionally remarkable if done right.
In this last scene, we see Chewbacca, BB8, Dio, C3PO, Poe, Finn, and Rey on an ambiguous grass planet with a grey sky as they look over to see a destroyed structure. Since this trailer isn't like Endgame and isn't showing footage past the first twenty minutes, I am calling it out now that this shot is from the third act of the film, where all the characters have to confront Kylo Ren, and the returning character, where the fate of the galaxy will be decided once, and for all.
"Ha Ha Ha Ha!" We here the returning character in the film, the grand Sith Lord himself, Emporer Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). At Star Wars Celebration JJ Abrams did reveal that McDiarmid was on set shooting new footage for the film, and the character will, in fact, return in the franchise in some capacity.
So there are two possibilities here.
1) Palpatine returns as a force ghost and guides Kylo Ren on a mission to allow the First Order to rule the galaxy and destroy the last Jedi, Rey.
2) Palpatine managed to come back to life after he was vaporized on the Death Star 2.0, and is now back after a hiatus, and is back in the burnt flesh to guide Kylo Ren, to destroy the last Jedi, Rey.
I am curious to see how Sheev returns in the franchise, and what role he will play. I am guessing that Abrams was going to have Snoke fill the role that Sheev is going to in this film.
And the title reveal of episode nine is "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." This title is interesting as it hints towards the Skywalker family rising up against the threat in this film. In the film, there are only two Skywalkers left alive. That being General Leia, and Kylo Ren, A.K.A Ben Solo. It seems like Rey will try her hardest to let the 'Skywalker' in Ben rise, and for him to stop the dark side infiltrating himself, bringing balance to the force.
Anyway, that does it for this teaser breakdown, and there was a lot featured in this short teaser between the new characters, like Dio, and the retuning characters such as Lando and also Sheev. I am also excited what the conclusion of this Skywalker, three trilogy saga will look like, especially in Abrams' hands.
