THE FLASH "THE ICICLE COMETH" REVIEW
Season 5 Episode 6:
Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of the Flash, directed by Chris Peppe, and in this episode we see Caitlin’s father get revealed and his true identity. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let’s recap then review.
With the rest of the team put investigating the identity of Cicada, Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin go to find her father, Thomas Snow in a remote government base in the Arctic. At the base, the original team finds Thomas and bring him back to STAR Labs. Cisco has his suspicions and he and Barry discover that Thomas is actually his ice counterpart, the Killer Frost version of Caitlin’s father, named “Icicle”, who steals a stabilizer that Caitlin was developing.
At a facility, Icicle lowers the temperature. The team suits up as Barry, Nora, Ralph, Cisco, and Caitlin go to confront Icicle, however, everyone starts to freeze, except Caitlin, who withstands the temperature. Caitlin turns into Killer Frost and confronts Icicle, destroying the stabilizer serum, and Icicle flies away. Back at STAR Labs, the team has Killer Frost back and finds the satellite where Cicada got his dagger, and they have a lead on his identity and his daughter.
Overall, this episode was a well-directed episode. The visuals used in the cinematography and the lightning were well used to link to the characters of Killer Frost and Icicle, such as the heavy use of the white and blue colors in most shots.
What I liked the most about this episode was having the original team together. It felt special where it showed this personal story for Caitlin, and it showed how her closest friends are there to support and help Caitlin. It shows how much these three have grown as friends and their support for one another, after all, they’ve been through. It felt like an episode which could have been from season one or two. I do wish that the episode played a little more on a horror element, creating a little more suspense, and extending this plot forward a little more.
I do wish that the episode did focus on the Icicle plot a little more, instead of cutting to the other characters. This is because the plots with Ralph Cecile, Iris, Nora, and Sherloque were a little boring, and didn’t add much to the episode and took away from the narrative of Caitlin and her father.
One thing in the episode that was awesome was the name drop of Victor Freeze, who is Mr. Freezee, the Batman villain. We may see the character in the Arrowverse, maybe with the Batwoman character later in the crossover, or even in her own show.
The character of Icicle was interesting. He saw Killer Frost as his daughter which is an interesting concept. I also do like how he attempted to look like Thomas, it created for an interesting twist. The show’s portrayal of the character was interesting. His look differs from the comic counterpart which I am open to change, however, I would have liked to have seen the comic book look because it looks awesome. However, I do see why that look may have been opted out as it seems like it may be difficult to pull that off.
The cast of the episode was great. Starring in the episode we had Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost), Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ the Flash), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramone/ Vibe), Kyle Secor (Thomas Snow/ Icicle), Jessica Parker Kennedy (Nora West-Allen/ XS), Candice Patton (Iris West), Hartley Sawyer (Ralph Dibny/ Elongated Man), Tom Cavanagh (Sherloque Wells), and Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton).
Overall, this episode was a great introduction to the character of Icicle and an interesting way to bring back Killer Frost. The episode suffered from focusing on every character instead of the core plot which would have created a more suspenseful and heartfelt story. I will give this episode an 8 out 10.
