"DETECTIVE PIKACHU" TRAILER BREAKDOWN
To start off, Detective Pikachu is based off the Detective Pikachu game, which I have not played. I do know the bases, a rough-talking Pikachu detective works with a boy. The film seems similar to the game based on this synopsis given for the film:
"The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim (Cody Smith) to find out what happened.
Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds): a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery.
Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City--a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world--they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe."
To start off, the synopsis does paint a pretty simple plot, which is great, as there can be more attention, and I think that is one thing everyone is looking forward to. The one thing to point out is that the most likely reason why Cody can hear Pikachu is that of the trainer bond. There are only a few things from the trailer I want to point out, such as some scenes and character designs, so here we go.
The Poke` of the hour, Detective Pikachu himself looks awesome. I love the simple design of the character, and he translates well from game boy to technically anime to now live action. The design of Pikachu in live action is better than I could have anticipated. The more fluffy texture does suit the character and give him that loveable money-taking look. the facial features are also great, with the red check dots, and the eyes. I also do like the detective hat that Pikachu is wearing, it does look like the game.
Ryan Reynolds also sounds great as detective Pikachu, a voice which suits a Pikachu who still seems cute, however, can be threatening. In the game, detective Pikachu's voice was a little deeper and always gave me that impression that he would be seen behind the scenes with a cigar in his mouth, not this film detective Pikachu.
I do like this shot of Jigglypuff, who obviously just used sing to put this person asleep and is now annoyed. The thing about Jigglypuff is that it is a "Balloon Pokémon ", but here the film changed it so now Jigglypuff has fur, instead of being round and smooth. In the background of this shot, there is a Machamp and Primeape battle, which I believe has been in the anime before, and those tickets look very cheap.
Bulbasaur looks awesome. The Pokémon translates well onto screen, and they look aesthetically pleasing, especially with the 'bulb' on their back. In size comparison with Cody and Pikachu, they look quite big so it will be interesting to see what Ivysaur and Venusaur look, size wise with the Bulbasaur. The blue Pokémon behind Bulbasaur is Morelull, which is a gen seven Pokémon, so it's a little weird seeing them in a more forest setting.
Arguably the best third stage starter Pokémon, Charizard, here in live action. I have to start off by saying that this looks incredible. The color, the textures, the scale, the CG, the fire, it all looks awesome, and it would this the Charizard I have envisioned to see in real life.
To discuss the scene, it appears that there is some sort of probably illegal Pokémon cage fighting, potentially ran by Team Rocket, and Pikachu and Cody will most likely investigate this place in the middle of the film.
Okay, this is epic, Greninja, in live action looks amazing. Greninja is one of my personal favorite Pokémon in gen five, so seeing him in live action is amazing, and I am excited to see where this Pokémon fits into the film as we see a few of them in this forest scene and also in a scene in a building later in the trailer.
This is a part of the Charizard scene that was earlier in the trailer, and Cody and Pikachu are investigating. I am excited to see how this scene fits into the film as it seems awesome. At some point, this Pikachu ends up in the cage fighting Charizard which will be interesting. And remember, this Pikachu isn't Ash's one "thunderbolt" one hit Pikachu.
In this shot here we also see Rufflet to the left of Pikachu, and then Squirtle is on the right to him, looking awesome.
In this shot, we see one of the protagonists of the film, Lucy (Kathryn Newton) who has a Psyduck in the back there, who looks in a lot of pain with his constant headache. It seems like these four are the main characters who are going to be trying to find Harry. I am guessing that Lucy has a Psyduck, and she is dressed like a trainer that could be seen in the main series game, so she will most likely have other Pokémon up her sleeves.
When I have thought about Pokémon in real life, there have been a few that I have dreaded to see what they would look like. Those Pokémon are Pinsir, Jynx, Kabutops, Giratina, and of course, Mr. Mime. But here we are, Mr. Mime in real life, in all your nightmares.
To be honest, it doesn't look as horrifying as I would have anticipated, it looks like a Pokémon with the textures it has, so there is not the ethics question of Mr. Mime being a Pokémon or a borderline human. The scene that we see in the trailer is actually entertaining and does play with the character in a neat way.
My biggest question is that if they go onto have a live-action film focusing on Ash Ketchum, just know that this is who his mother is sleeping with while he's away.
Overall, this trailer for detective Pikachu was awesome, it introduces the world of live action-CG Pokémon, which is something which many fans of the franchise, including myself have been anticipating for the past two decades, and this seems like an awesome start, especially with R.J Palmer, who did Pokémon in real life art a few years back, being a concept artist for this film.
