CAPTAIN MARVEL FIRST LOOK BREAKDOWN
Yesterday it was teased by Brie Larson that new Captain Marvel images were going to be released, and here we are, with our first official look at Marvel's latest hero on the cover of Entertainment Weekly and we also have ten other images from the set of the film where we see returning characters, and new characters and races in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so let's break it down.
But let's start with the cover. In the center is Carol Danvers A.K.A Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in her comic accurate suit which has the red blue and gold. The suit is based off the suit she used when she got the "Captain" title and moved away from the "Ms. Marvel" title, as in that time the character had a series of different suits, some of which we might see in the film.
One of the main changes of the suit is the sash. In the comics, the suit had a sash which was on the left side of the suit. In this image, the suit has a belt instead. This was rumored a couple of years ago. But this is a great change because it looks more practical in terms of the character and her more military background. I feel like this could potentially be one of the reasons for the longer hair of the character (compared to the comics when Carol was Captain Marvel). The longer hair may be to have something flow behind her when she is flying, instead of what the sash would do. The other reason is also that of the era that the film is set, the 1990's, and Brie Larson also looks really good with the shoulder length hair.
Captain Marvel's fist glowing are her power blast, one of her several powers. They have a yellow glow to them, like the comics, however, they do look a little orange, and that is because of the color mixing with the red gloves, which Captain America style, do not have the fingertips. The power blasts look interesting, I like the effect that they have, as they blend in with the color scheme of the suit, all the while remaining distinctly different from the suit in a unique way.
Overall, the suit of Captain Marvel looks awesome. This is better than what I thought the suit would look like on screen in the MCU. This image does make the suit look a little fake, however, that is because of the filters that the image has on it. It will look a little more authentic in the film. But I really like the design of the suit, it looks comics accurate with the colors, and I appreciate the changes that are made to the suit from the comics as they are improvements. And Brie Larson looks amazing as Captain Marvel.
But now onto the images from the film set.
This is one of the most important images, as here we have Nick Fuy (Samuel L. Jackson) in the 1990's, with both of his eyes. In the film, there was de-aging technology to make Sam Jackson look younger in the film, and this image showcases it with the character looking younger. I am still kind of sad that there is no 90's afro on Fury. As ridiculous as it would have looked, it would be a neat call back to Jackson's hairstyle at the time. The scene in which this image is in has Fury talking to Carol, and Fury appears to have been attacked, with the stitches above his left eye, teasing that it has already been attacked, and will most likely in the film be attacked more until he losses it, thus the eye patch in current day.
On the left, we have Captain Mar-Vel (Jude Law) joined by Carol Danvers. Captain Mar-Vel is the original Captain Marvel who is an officer in the Kree militia. In the comics, Carol got her powers from being in an explosion with Mar-Vel which manipulated her DNA with Kree DNA giving her the plethora of powers she has.
In this shot, it appears that the two are in some Kree place, facility of the military. This can be told by the grey setting which is similar to what the Kree settings have looked like in Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of SHIELD season five.
The costumes that the two are wearing also resemble some sort of Kree suit, most likely a training suit. It does look similar to the Kree costumes which we have seen before in Agents of SHIELD.
It also appears that this scene takes place when Carol leaves the US military and joins the Kree military with Mar-Vel, possibly when she gets her powers.
Here is Carol Danvers once again on Earth, looking very 90's with the Nine Inch Nails shirt. In this scene, Carol is in some post officer, possibly trying to find some package which is either her's or something she needs to get for a mission. At this point in the film, Carol is involved with SHIELD as evident by her hat being the old SHIELD logo, which may be in on something Carol needs to recover.
This is arguably the coolest image next to the suit reveal. "Skrulls on the beach". The main villains of the film are the Skrull's. The bigger boss in the Skrull army is Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) who will wind up most likely being the main villain. However, what is going on in the film is that the main conflict is the Kree vs Skrull war. And since Carol and Mar-Vel are aligned with the Kree, so stopping the Skrulls is their main goal.
In this scene, the Skrulls appear to be landing on Earth. There are a few things which they could be doing, such as infiltrating SHIELD and finding Carol and Mar-Vel.
I have a theory: Since the Skrull's are shapeshifting aliens, one Skrull will disguise themselves as a SHIELD agent, and they will be the one who takes out Fury's eye, as Fury said in the Winter Soldier "The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." which would make perfect sense if someone he trusted was a Skrull who took out his left eye.
But the Skrull is a race of characters who I have been excited to see on screen since they were rumored back in 2011 for the first Avengers film. But now they are here, and they look really awesome. There are complex designs on their faces which can allow us to distinguish between characters, and the ears also look really awesome, giving them that otherworldly design and look.
Here is Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) an airforce pilot like Carol Danvers. The character is the best pilot in the air force with her nickname "Photon" which may refer to her speed and agility in the air. The character may be a type of antagonist for Carol at the beginning of the film with her being competition for Carol in the Air force.
Carol Danvers is in her air force pilot uniform, which means that this scene is taking place at the beginning of the film. At this point, Carol seems to be a relatively good pilot. It is possible that she gets into an accident and that is how she meets Mar-Vel and the Kree.
On the far left is one of the directors of the film, Ryan Fleck, and on the far left is the other director, Anna Boden. In the middle is Talos, Ben Mendelsohn's character who is a Skrull. This confirms that the Skrull will, in fact, be shape-shifting in the film, and on Earth.
Going back to the theory of Fury losing his eye to a Skrull, Talos could be the one to do that in this disguise.
I don't think that there will be any Skrulls in Avengers 4. That was a theory before Infinity War came out, however judging from what happened in the film, that will most likely not happen, as there is already a lot going on. However, this does not take away from the idea that there may be Skrulls still hiding on Earth allowing for a Captain Marvel sequel.
Here is a better look at the Captain Marvel costume. There is less of a filter on it here, and it looks more authentic and real world. The blue on the costume does pop quite a lot, while the red does look muted in comparison making it look almost like a crimson. The gold does look great on the uniform, a small detail here is that the gold does not run all the way through the upper half of the suit like in the comics, however, it is broken up through the chest and the arms.
This scene taking place in the desert may be Captain Marvel coming back to Earth to face the Skrulls. This may be happening towards the end of the film, in the third act of the film, which may explain the serious face. The desert setting reminds me somewhere that an air force plane could crash and Carol is responding. There are a number of situations which could be happening in this scene.
The suit here is what Captain Marvel is going to look like in Avengers 4, plus some minor suit adjustments.
On the left, we have Captain Mar-Vel in his super suit. This is similar to what we saw in the leaked set images, however, Carol was wearing the green suit. I did speculate the green suit is a Kree military suit which everyone wears. This further confirms Mar-Vel's involvement with the Kree. On the far left, we also have one of the directors of the film, Ann Boden.
However, the main star of the image is Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) who is making his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut in Guardians of the Galaxy. With this film taking place 20 or so years before Guardians, it explains why Ronan is alive. The character has a new suit which has subtle differences in the texture and design. However, the main principles and design elements of the original suit, such as the helmet is still there. Also, the face paints are missing as Ronan got those in Guardians of the Galaxy. Ronan does have his signature hammer.
The scene in this shot is most likely a confrontation between Ronan and Mar-Vel as Ronan is potentially superior to Mar-Vel. However, Ronan at the time was not involved too much with the Skrull war, however, more obsessed with getting revenge on Xander.
This is an awesome shot. In the corner, we have Mar-Vel and Ronan, while Carol is leading a group of alien Kree soldiers. The green suit that Carol is wearing is what we saw in the set pictures, and it is a military Kree uniform which everyone wears. The aliens behind Carol I cannot identify except one, Korath (Djimon Hounsou) who is too in the back left corner of the group. The aliens in this scene look interesting, and most of these races I do not believe that we have seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In this scene, Carol is most likely walking to go on a mission with her crew, which may be led by Mar-Vel. I am curious to see what this mission could end up being, but this scene would take place around the middle of the film where Carol is still in the Kree army.
Overall, these Captain Marvel images really excite me for the film. I love the reveal of the suit of Captain Marvel, as it carries over mostly the comic accurate designs while making appropriate adjustments to the suit in the MCU. Nicky Fury with two eyes, Ronan the accuser, the Skrulls, and Mar-Vel in these images excite me, as I am wondering what is going to happen with the characters in the film, but judging by their designs and reveal, all is looking good, and it gets me excited for what is to come next March.
