STAR WARS THE LAST JEDI REY DISCUSSION
To start off I want to say that Daisy Ridley was wonderful as Rey. She bought the character to life in a way which made her interesting and somewhat want to care about the character in the film. To recap, in the Last Jedi, Rey visits Luke on Ach-To, learns of how Ben Solo turned to Kylo Ren, got taught a little bit in the ways of the force by Luke, got some sort of force vision of mirrors, stole some books and left to save the Resistance on Crait.
The film showed how the character has progressed after her fight with Kylo Ren. She is interested in the force and wants to use the power, however, Luke does not want to train her because of how she can turn to the Dark Side. That mindset changed for Luke as Rey denied Kylo's offer to the Dark Side, and thus Luke died knowing that there is a Jedi within Rey as she refused the seduction of the Dark Side.
Rey's parents have been hyped as a big mystery in this trilogy, and it turns out that they were just ass holes who sold Rey for drinking money. The part of this answer that works is the fact that the force can call someone of nothing. You do not have to be born from greatness to achieve greatness. That answer is great for bringing across a theme of that sorts. However, I do see why people are upset with this answer as in the Force Awakens it was hyped up so much, from the Maz Kanata scenes, in that film Maz was questioning Han of Rey's origin as though she had a lineage that was important. There was so much set up for something where there was no payoff, which is why I see how people are mad at the answer.
From comments Daisy Ridley has made about her future in the Star Wars saga, it appears that Episode IX is her last film, as Ridley does not want to come back for any more Star Wars films. So episode IX will wrap up Rey's story. It seems like that film will be more hopeful and will not end with her dying. In the film, she will either kill Kylo Ren or redeem him. Whatever lesson she gets from force ghost Luke. From the end of the Last Jedi, we know that Rey stole the Jedi books, which means that she has the knowledge she needs to improve her powers but more importantly, create herself a new lightsaber. The Skywalker Lightsaber was torn in half in the Last Jedi so Rey may retool that Lightsaber, using the same split Kyber crystal.
In the Last Jedi, there were some flaws in the writing of the character. Like how Rey showed signs of the Darkside when Luke was training her, however, showed no signs of the dark side when offered a place by Kylo Ren. One thing I do also dislike with the writing is how Rey all of a sudden wants to redeem Kylo Ren. She saw him kill Han, she knows he is a monster, and it will be weird to see her try to redeem Kylo. I believe the redeeming role of Kylo could have been played differently with the Leia character, however, with the passing of Carrie Fisher, it seems like the story was changed a bit.
In conclusion, the Last Jedi, though flawed in the some of the development of the Rey still showed her off to be an enjoyable character in the film, with Daisy Ridley portraying the character to the best of her abilities.
