STAR WARS THE LAST JEDI LUKE SKYWALKER DISCUSSION
The Last Jedi shows us Luke Skywalker after the Force Awakens where he is presented his father's, and his old Lightsaber which he immediately throws away. When Rey asked what he has been up to, Luke tells Rey that he cut himself from the force so no one would track him through the force, therefore he could die on Ach-To so the Jedi could end. Luke wanted the Jedi to end because of the belief he had that the Jedi were in the wrong and kept the force exclusively for themselves, and therefore was reluctant to train Rey. When Rey confronts Luke of how he was the cause of Kylo Ren, Luke tells Rey the truth. When Rey leaves to meet Kylo, Luke gets a visit from force ghost Yoda who tells Luke that failure is an option, as it is a learning curve. At the end of the film, Luke shows up on Crait to stop Kylo from getting to the Resistance. We find out that Luke was projecting a hologram of himself on Crait to confront Kylo. We then see Luke on Ach-To stopping his hologram and then becoming one with the force.
In the film we discover what Luke was doing on Ach-To, wanting to die so the Jedi would end. That is why the ancient Jedi text was on Ach-To, so no one would ever get to them, thus there would be no Jedi. When we first meet Luke, he throws away the lightsaber. This was to show that Luke wanted nothing to do with the saber after the horrors he went through with the Saber. The part that did not work with this scene was that is was used as a humorous moment, and not something that was to be taken seriously, which I wish it were.
On Ach-To there were some really awesome scenes, such as Luke fishing, which was great to see, and the green milk part was an alright easter egg, something that did not work too well in the film, especially with that look he gave Rey when he was drinking the milk.
A lot of people were complaining that Luke in this film was not the same character as he was in the original trilogy. In the film, it was explained that Luke blamed himself for the rise of Kylo Ren, the end of the end of the Republic, and the current horror in the galaxy. In the flashback, we saw Luke about to kill his nephew. People were complaining about "why would Luke do this". Luke was going to kill Kylo because he saw the darkness which was darker than what was in his father and he did not want another Darth Vader, so he was going to kill Kylo. But Ben saw Luke and got scared, thus Kylo Ren was born. That is why Luke is the cause of Kylo and the reason he changed. The film should have illustrated more damage to Luke in the flashback, such as having a Mara Jade be killed by Kylo, that way the audience could see why Luke is so different.
The death of Luke Skywalker was an I thought a nice send off to the character, especially with the twin sunset. It bought the character story full circle with the camera shot from a New Hope to the Last Jedi. I do see why people were upset that Luke did not go out in a blaze of glory, but it was a neat death which he did have, saving his family and friends, and also fulfilling his goal of dying on Ach-To. In the future of the films, it is without a say that Luke will appear in Episode IX as a force ghost. In that film, he can both taunt Kylo Ren, and help Rey, so that will be exciting.
In the film, there were some great scenes with Luke. The end hologram battle was so insane and some of the coolest things I have seen in Star Wars. My favorite scenes of Luke in the film was when he saw his old friend. When Luke meets R2D2, I loved how Luke acted like a kid and was filled with excitement. I also did enjoy Luke meet with Leia on Crait and it was awesome seeing Luke give C3PO the wink, a great call back to Luke being the only person who respected 3PO.
Anyway, Mark Hamill did a fabulous job playing an older, more aged Luke Skywalker who we see has been through a lot. Luke was put in some of the greatest scenes in the film, and will definitely appear in Episode IX. Comment below your thoughts on Luke Skywalker in Episode VIII and what was your favorite Luke scene? As always thanks for reading, take care.
