SUPERGIRL 'FAR FROM THE TREE' REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 3:

Supergirl is back with a brand new episode which focuses on a Martian Manhunter plot as well as a Maggie Sawyer plot. I will go other both plots separately. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens with Kara and Alex organizing Alex and Maggie's bridal shower. J'onn walks in and he tells the Danver sisters that they are in charge of the DEO while he goes away. Alex asks what he is doing, and J'onn tells the two that he is going to Mars to help M'gann. Kara offers to come with him, as he and M'gann have helped her when she has had problems.
J'onn and Kara go to J'onns' garage where they go in his car which transforms into a spaceship which they fly off in, to Mars.

On Mars, Kara, and J'onn meet up with M'gann and her White Martian resistance, who are hiding out in a cave away from the other White Martians. M'gann tells J'onn that he is not the only green Martian left. And that they have another Green Martian in a containment cell. J'onn looks at the security footage of this other Green Martian and J'onn recognizes it as his father, M'yrnn. M'gann explains that M'yrnn knows the location of a powerful, unactivated staff in possession of the White Martians, which the resistance needs to get back. J'onn goes to talk with his father, who believes J'onn is a White Martian who shapeshifted, as he knows that J'onn would not have survived as he would have not fled.

When J'onn has a break from talking to his father, he has a talk with Kara; and how his father thinks that he is a coward. Meanwhile, a resistance fighter, Till'all says that if J''onn cannot get through to his father, then they will have no choice but to kill him. J'onn has another talk with M'yrnn, in his human form, M'yrnn then forms into a human form to communicate with J'onn. While that conversation goes down, Till'all knocks out M'gann and decides to try to kill M'yrnn. Kara tries to stop him, but she flees with J'onn and M'yrnn, who end up in J'onns house on Mars.

In the old house, M'yrnn slaps J'onn for bringing him to his house. Kara has a talk with M'yrnn, and she tells him to give J'onn a chance to prove that he is his son. J'onn gives V a telepathic flashback to back when Mars was not in peril. The flashback consisted of M'yrnn, and J'onns daughters surprising J'onn on his birthday. M'yrnn realizes that J'onn is his son, and he apologizes that he didn't believe him and he is happy that J'onn is alive, after all these years.

J'onn, M'yrnn, and Kara meet up with M'gann and the resistance and with M'yrnn knowing the location of the staff, the resistance heads out with Kara and the Green Martian father and son. Kara drives J'onn's spaceship with some Britney Spears playing into a White Martian ritual with the spear. Kara starts to throw some quips around until the resistance and J'onn and M'yrnn ambush the White Martians. Kara joins in on the fight and she kicks some White Martian ass. When the resistance is taking the L, Kara takes the staff and starts to shoot the White Martians. Winning the battle, Kara hands the staff over to Tall'all who passes the staff onto M'gann showing a victory for the resistance on Mars. Kara, J'onn, and M'yrnn say their goodbyes to M'gann and the resistance to head to Earth.

Concurrently happening in the episode, Maggie and Alex have their bridal shower. Maggie invites her father who she has not seen in a while to the shower. Suprised that he came, Maggie and her father, Oscar Rodas go to the bridal shower. On their trip Oscar tells Maggie that he is impressed on all the cases she has cracked in her lifetime. At the bridal shower, places a photo of Maggie from his wallet on a board which had pictures of Alex. At the bridal shower, Alex and Maggie kiss, which makes Oscar leave. Outside Oscar and Maggie argue. He tells her that the world has not changed its views on minorities, which Maggie argues otherwise.

Later on, Maggie goes to see Oscar at a park. She gives him back the photo of her in his wallet. Maggie tells Oscar that she invited him because he thought he had changed, but obviously not, and that she does not need his acceptance with being who she is. The father and daughter then part ways, with Maggie getting some closure on her relationship with her father.

Landing on Earth, Kara says goodbye to J'onn and M'yrnn; who go home enjoying their life, not knowing they are alone.

The plot with Martian Manhunter in the episode was a strong storyline. I enjoyed the focus on family, it was a side of the Martian Manhunter character we have not seen before; which was pulled off really well. A complaint I do have on the episode is some of the cinematography. It just wasn't good at times, with the lack of image stabilization in the shoots. The CG in the episode looked relatively good, there were a couple times that it looked off, that was with Martian Manhunter's father. But overall, it was solid.

The cast in the episode killed it. We, of course, had David Harewood as Martian Manhunter who stole the show. It was great seeing the actor pull off J'onn in this state of desperation, in the best story arc the character has had in the series. The rest of the cast was also great in the episode, we had Carl Lumbly as M'yrnn, Sharon Leal (M'gann/ Miss Martian), Dewshane Williams (Till'all), Florina Lima (Maggie Sawyer), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Carlos Bernard(Oscar Rodas), and of course, the girl of steel herself, Melissa Benoist (Supergirl/Kara Danvers)

In conclusion, this episode of Supergirl was a really solid which bought a lot of heart in both plots involving Martian Manhunter and Maggie. It was great to see character development of both these characters, and their relationships with their parents. I will give the episode an 8 out of 10. Please comment below your thoughts on the episode down below, I would really like to know. As always thanks for reading, take care.
